Western Carolina University Chancellor David O. Belcher declared 2011-12 “a point of departure” for the institution, announcing a new strategic planning process as the top priority in a series of initiatives designed to give the WCU community a sense of ownership in the university’s destiny.
New WCU Chancellor David Belcher promised Jackson County’s town and county leaders that Western would draw up a new strategic plan that includes ideas and voices from the local community, according to a report from the Smoky Mountain News. When asked about Cullowhee's Town Center, an initiative of former Chancellor Bardo, which has been criticized by some for containing mostly chain-owned retailers, Belcher told the Smoky Mountain News that “my own preferences are for the unique,” and that he has “no predisposed feelings about building this campus community with a bunch of chains.”
