Pizza! Pizza!: It seems that West Asheville is now in less need of what had seemed glaringly sparse -- pizza. The second independent pizza company to open there in 2005, Digable Pizza offers artisan pizzas, salads with Annie's Dressings, wings and even empanadas with freshly made salsa. Digable has a beer and wine license, too, so you can enjoy a cold 420 Pale Ale or a $1.25 PBR with your slice. According to their menu, the new pizza joint uses as many organic and all-natural ingredients as possible, so buon appetito! Digable Pizza is located at 794 Haywood Road. For more information, call 255-8586.

Dining and Whining: Author Terry Ruscin is a "gastro-snob" -- and proud of it. Fed up with culinary mediocrity, Ruscin vents his displeasure with sub-par restaurant experiences in his new book, Dining and Whining: Commiseration and Celebration for Gastro-snobs. (See Xpress's recent review). From 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, Ruscin will appear at Jane Asher's Antiques & Fine Traditions in Hendersonville to sign his book and answer questions. A raffle will also be held for a local restaurant gift certificate and a bottle of fine wine. For more information, call 698-0018.

New Indian: Another new restaurant has popped up in downtown Asheville. Mela, named after a Hindi word for a celebration or a coming together, opened July 19. The beautifully decorated restaurant, at 70 Lexington Ave., inhabits the building that was formerly home to Body of Christ Church. According to the menu, Mela serves "authentic north and south Indian dishes as diverse and vibrant as the peoples and regions of India," including seafood, lamb, vegetarian items and fresh-baked breads from the tandoori oven. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day but Monday. Call 225-8880 for more information.
