West of Memphis (R)

Genre: Documentary
Director: Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil)
Starring: Damien Wayne Echols, Jason Baldwin, Jessie Misskelley, Lorris Davis
The Story: Documentary on the West Memphis Three and the efforts to prove them innocent of the murders for which they were convicted in 1994. The Lowdown: If you know little about the case, this should be one suspenseful moviegoing experience. If you're familiar with the case, it ought to still prove a compelling watch because of the amassed and distilled information.5 comments -
The Gatekeepers (PG-13)

Genre: Documentary
Director: Dror Moreh (Sharon)
Starring: Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter, Yuval Diskin, Carmi Gillon, Yaakov Peri, Avraham Shalom
The Story: An oral history of the Israeli intelligence agency, Shin Bet, as told by the men who’ve run it. The Lowdown: An informative and occasionally eye-opening documentary that’s a bit too stodgy and erudite, but works well when it displays its humanity. -
Searching for Sugar Man (PG-13)

Genre: Music Documentary
Director: Malik Bendjelloul
Starring: Sixto Rodriguez, Malik Bendjelloul, Clarence Avant, Eva Rodriguez, Regan Rodriguez, Sandra Rodiguez-Kennedy
The Story: Music documentary about the mysterious and little-known pop star Rodriguez who disappeared from the scene after two critically-praised, but commercially disastrous albums in early 1970s. The Lowdown: An absolutely splendid documentary that tells a true stoty of amazing improbability. Beautifully structured with a genuine dramatic arc and a lot of nice music. Don't miss this one. -

Pina (NR)

Genre: Performance Documentary
Director: Wim Wenders
Starring: Pina Bausch, Regina Advento, Malou Airaudo, Ruth Amarante
The Story: Documentary in which the works of German choreographer Pina Bausch are committed to film. The Lowdown: An altogether engaging -- sometimes breathtaking -- look at one of the major figures of modern dance. A rare look at one artist by another that should be seen. - View All Articles
