Asheville Civitan Club, Inc. has been serving Asheville and Buncombe County since 1921 as “builders of good citizenship in the Land of the Sky.” Civitan is a worldwide community-service organization, founded by a small group of businessmen in 1917 who met weekly to consider how they could improve their community. Civitan International was established in 1920. Today 28,263 men and women in 944 clubs, plus around 15,000 additional members in 500 Junior Civitan Clubs around the world work together to improve the communities where they live and work.
The 93 members of the Asheville Civitan Club represent many facets of the community, including a large contingent of retired persons who bring a diverse variety of talents and experience to the club. President Larry Liggett says, “Belonging to the Asheville Civitan Club is a personally rewarding experience. From our wonderful scholarship program, to working with disabled youth and adults, to helping recognize and award our good fellow citizens Civitan is making a difference in our community.”
The Asheville Civitan Foundation is a nonprofit entity that administers endowment funds, members’ contributions and proceeds from club fundraisers. The primary beneficiaries of these funds each year are college-bound seniors from each of Buncombe County’s seven high schools.
The club meets every Tuesday at noon at Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Asheville. Meetings are open to the public. Each new member of the Asheville Civitan Club must be sponsored by an established member. Info: http://www.ashevillecivitan.org.
