Spotlight on: Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition

Did you know that federal and state officials look at the failure rate of 3rd grade end-of-grade tests to determine how many prison beds will be needed in the coming years? Without support, children often continue to fail and can eventually drop out of school. Students that drop out of school are three times more likely than graduates to be incarcerated. It doesn’t have to be that way.

The Asheville-Buncombe Education Coalition can help you help a child succeed. Its member agencies work together to provide tutors and mentors for Asheville City and Buncombe County students identified as needing extra help, but who don’t have access to other services. A commitment of one to two hours a week for 7-8 months during the school year is required. Sessions take place either in school or in an after-school setting.

“She’s in my heart. I’ll do anything I can to make sure she knows that I’m there for her every step of the way,” says Jewel Sluder, on working with a child she has tutored for the last four years.

Prospective tutors and mentors may fill out an application online at http://www.abeducationcoalition.org (click on “How Can I Help/ Tutors and Mentors”).
