Spotlight on: Asheville Chess Club

Asheville Chess Club is a casual and friendly, community-oriented club. Chess players of all strengths and ages are welcome to participate Wednesday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the North Asheville Community Center, 37 Larchmont Lane off of Merrimon Avenue. Members range from beginners and experts to children and elderly, and include rated and unrated players, chess students and chess teachers. Join in for kibitzing or analyzing games, or just stop by for a cup of coffee to check the club out. Games are played with and without clocks for longer and shorter games. There are also a handful of members who play xianqi (Chinese chess) in addition to international chess. The club’s focus is on learning about chess and enjoying companionship more than on ratings and competition. “It’s my social hour,” says member Tom Brown.

Currently, the club does not play United States Chess Federation rated games, but members are open to the idea. The club is working on promoting and organizing more local chess programs and tournaments in Asheville, and is seeking more players. Everything needed to play chess is supplied by the club: boards, pieces and clocks. Membership is free. To those who might be intimidated by chess, member Judd Pires reassuringly states, “Chess ain’t nothing but tall checkers.” Info: http://www.AshevilleChess.com or .
