Top Drawer: fashion news and views

One of the best parts about the summer festival season is getting gussied up in flamboyant alter-ego-inspired apparel. Tie-dyes, colorful sundresses and dramatic hats are pulled from closets along with devil sticks and hula hoops. But shouldn’t a festival also be a good place to shop for those inner-child-pleasing wardrobe pieces? At the biannual Lake Eden Arts Festival, options abound. Here are some of the most popular offerings sold at LEAF, which took place earlier this month.

Channel Cindy Lou Who: This spring’s most popular trend among little girls and their moms were these hoop skirts from Bold Mary (http://www.boldmary.com). Created by actress and artist Augusta McDonald, the collection is billed as “a hoop skirt for the 21st century.” Psychedelic-print stretch fabric is finished with a “Whos down in Whoville”-like ring for a fun, cartoonish effect.

Go organic Designer Andrea Crouse of Gaia Conceptions (http://www.gaiaconceptions.com) makes “Eco Chic for the Urban Nomad.” Her spring 2008 collection features drapey, body-conscious hemp in rich colors and stylish shapes.

Patch things up: The tried-and-true hippie spirit made an appearance at the Clothes for the Soul booth, with natural fiber patchwork dresses and skirts.

Try this on
