Returning back to the area after a hiatus of sorts in south Louisiana for a decade, there is one scene that seems somewhat scarce in Asheville. There is little if anything for really engaged Jazz. For those serious jazz bops, where do you go regionally to listen to Jazz? Right now I’m listening to Stan Getz and Chet Baker from The Stockholm Concerts box set and I miss that opportunity to venture to a place in New Orleans or Baton Rouge where you can hear young musicians who feel just what folks like Getz, Davis, Baker and Brubeck were working in their music craft.
What are Asheville’s Jazz lovers listening to?

How many of you are aware of this event which is in year three (I think) at Brevard Music Center in September? This years headliner will be Sam Bush, mandolin and fiddle player for the New Grass Revival. On the days’ schedule with Sam will be Tim O’Brien, also fiddle and mandolin player, the family group known as Cherryholmes and the Steep Canyon Rangers who host the show annually. Woody Platt the bands lead vocalist, is a Breverd native.

http://www.mountainsongfestival.com/

If you have not heard the Rangers you’re missing out on one of the top local acts known world wide with several appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and a touring schedule that takes them abroad. The little fiddle player Nicky Sanders, a current Asheville resident, is a sure fire crowd pleaser.

If you’ve not been to see a music event at the Grey Eagle maybe you should put it on a list of things to do. The club has a funky atmosphere but is set up with seating and an actual stage and all arranged in such a way as to provide very close viewing. On August ninth one of my favorites, John Cowan, will appear. John was the bassist and lead vocalist for the New Grass Revival along with Sam Bush and Bela Fleck. The three still can be seen performing together at festivals but this is the John Cowan Band which last appeared here at the Brewgrass Festival couple of years ago. http://johncowan.com/site.php

Sorry about the dumb title, but I didn’t know how else to sum up the energy of the Hanson one-mile walk that just took place. Anybody want to fess-up and admit that they walked a barefoot mile for Hanson’s African poverty-awareness campaign?

(For clarity, I didn’t walk. I have a very painful and unsightly ingrown toenail.)
