How about some predictions and such for the upcoming year. Well it started, but still a long way to go. Here’s my picks:

AFC East: Patriots
AFC North: Steelers
AFC South: Titans
AFC West: Chargers
AFC Wildcard: Colts and Ravens

NFC East: Giants
NFC North: Vikings
NFC South: Saints
NFC West: Seahawks
NFC Wildcard: Eagles and Packers

Super Bowl pick: Chargers vs. Vikings. San Diego finally cashes in on their talent and win their first Super Bowl.

Seems like every year there is a bad team that rises up. My guesses this year are the Packers (6-10 last year) and/or the Seahawks (4-12) in the NFC. AFC is tough for the sleeper picks. I was going to say the Texans (8-8), but they looked horrible at home. I also thought the Bengals (4-11-1) had a chance…but they sucked as well. It’s only week 1 so I’ll stick with that.

Seems like my biggest snubs would be the Dolphins, Panthers, Cardinals and Falcons who were all in the playoffs last year. To add to the list of high expectations left out of my picks would be the Bears and Cowboys.

Growing up, my two favorite teams were the Saints and the Colts. These were two of the worst teams in the league when I was little but always pulled for them. Would love to see them in the Super Bowl and there’s a chance it could happen this year.

Research Finds Football Hits May Lead to Brain Injury. Many of you know I have worked as an RN for over 30 years and a few of those years I worked with those with brain injuries. I was always stunned at how glibly parents allowed their children to participate in sports activities that could easily cause permanent damage to their fragile bodies.

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Nightline/research-finds-football-lead-brain-injury/Story?id=8838451&page=2

Researcher: Blows to Head Kill Brain Cells, Lead to Dysfunction

Omalu compared a region of the brain of a normal, middle-aged individual to a football player’s. His analysis showed an accumulation of brown staining in the football player’s brain.

The brown blotches mark the accumulation of tau protein—an abnormal substance that can emerge within the brain after repeated blows to the head. It’s known to kill off brain cells, ultimately leading to cognitive dysfunction, even dementia, Omalu said. It’s rare to find accumulation in the brain of a 90-year-old—but at the time it was almost unheard of in a man of 50.

The rest of the article is quite extensive and well worth a read..

I recently started a thread to curb our obsession with sports.. Abolishing Balls is a great thread to examine the reasons to change our cultural focus..

Well, since there has not been a sports topic since the NCAA tournament maybe it’s a good time to discuss the ‘national past time.’ (Despite Mayor Marshes’ hatred of the sport)
So, how about some predictions for the post season, thoughts on the future of the sport or discussion on the revelations of two of the sports biggest personalities being accused and (one of them so far) admitting to the use of P.E.D.‘s. Not sure if this is a hopeless cause for a thread but worth a try.

I’m feeling a bit undone by the revelations about Andre Agassi—the folk hero of my teenage years.

So it was his hairpiece that made him lose so inexplicably in his hot pink tights vs. Gomez in the French?

I guess it’s not so strange the stories I used to hear about him doing espresso shots before U.S. Open matches. Apparently, Agassi’s upcoming autobiography will accuse his own father of giving him speed before significant matches in the juniors.

My dad made me work at the grocery store if I wanted Air Trainers like Agassi.

I suppose with the sort of collective apology given A-Rod, and more hetty users like ‘Sheed, Ricky Williams, Manny, whomever…. Agassi figures he may as well empty his closet.

Still hurts a bit though.

Wonder what Johnny Mac was on?

This is probably not a big deal around here, but it was kind of exciting for us. Yesterday morning around 8:30 we looked out the window and saw a big black bear maybe 20 feet or so from the house walking down the driveway. I grabbed the camera and we went outside, but as soon it heard us it took off back into the woods, so I never got a chance to snap a picture.
