OK- so we have a dog that has been “diagnosed” with a flea allergy.

We have tried:

Getting her Frontline treatments monthly (expensive)…

Supplemented with Capstar pills (which kill fleas and their eggs for several days)

Bathing her twice a month at Soapy Dog, with their natural flea treatment

Washing her bedding in hot water every other day

vacuuming our couches, etc.

Banning all dogs that have not been treated from our house

She had some relief this past month, but then- POW- they are back and she is itching like crazy and has “flea dirt” and rash all over!!!

What else can we do!?!!

Has anyone tried diatomaceous earth?

She’s an Alaskan dog, so we are thinking that is why she is allergic to them...just doesn’t have any resistance. Other dogs we used to have around noticably have fleas, but do not itch like she does...?

Anyone tried Frontline and found Advantix more effective?

Thanks :0)

My dog has spent much of the last six months slowly ruining the carpet in my apartment, virtually guaranteeing that I’ll never see my deposit again. It got me thinking about other people and their pets, and how my turmoil is probably petty when compared to the high-drama tales some of you have to tell.

So, let’s hear some tales about how your pets have ruined, wrecked and otherwise destroyed your lives, all the while being oh-so-cute in the process.

Hey guys :0)

Over the past year, we have started to feed my dog a variety of foods, in combination with a good vegetarian dog food we found. We just figured that, if dogs have such intense olfactory senses, it must suck to have to eat bland dog food all the time. Especially with the aromas of our yummy food wafting around (must be torturous).

We started with just brown rice and beans, but have since added fresh vegetable trimmings and other cooked vegetables (potatoes, broccoli, sprouts, yam skins, butternut squash, etc.)
This has made such a difference. She used to just nibble on her food throughout the day, and now she jumps around wagging her tail when we prepare her food- and always cleans her plate (well...except for some broccoli stems or pieces of cabbage she manages to sort out of the mix). The vet said this was way better than any processed dog food (as long as we keep it simple and natural).

Just putting it out there as an easy way to bring loads of joy to your best friend’s daily life.

Downside: she has been dropping some pretty stinky bombs here and there...must be the cabbage....Pee-yuuuu!

Just head to the dog park and, as you enter the enclosure, admonish your dog “Come here, Humpy!” People may not understand your humor. Here’s some other dog names that may be questionable.

Bitey - probably won’t be good around children.
Snout - a derivative of ‘Scout.’
Barker - not even what Bob named his
Killer - bad press
Stinkbutt - probably won’t get petted.
Edible - Favorite Chinese name, Edible Lee.
Chaser - won’t come back to this name.
Fangs - may need dental work.
Digger - good for farmers, not so much lawn-owners.
Neuter - not good for his self-esteem.

And why confuse children with “Bear?”

Martha Stewart named her dogs “Teeny” and “Weenie” even if they are small, do they go with the decor? Interestingly Ben Afleck named his dog “Martha Stewart”

This forum is for discussion about local pet-related topics. Have a warning about taking your pet on a walk downtown? Hoping to bond over stories of animal rescue? Have a funny story about your pooch or kitty? Post about it here.

Also, please keep the Xpress forum rules in mind when posting. These are:

1. Think before you post: Seriously. We’re trying to spark interesting conversations about local topics here, and the last thing we want is to flood the board with thoughtless content. This includes the needless repeating of catchphrases, redundant posting of internet memes and posts with little original content.

2. No, SPAMming, no malicious links, no illegal downloads: It’s fine to discuss a business or service, but if the conversation veers into self-promotion, we’ll close down the thread. Depending on the nature of the post, we may also ban the user. Likewise, it’s fine to post links to relevant topics, but linking to any URL with spyware, malicious code, pornography or illegal download sites is strictly forbidden, and will likely get your IP address banned. Think before you post!

3. Use the “NWS” warning for questionable material: If you are unsure if a link is suitable for all users, please mark the link as “Not Work Safe” or “NWS” before and after the URL. This simply indicates that the link connects to a site or content that most people would get in trouble for looking at while at work.

4. Be civil: It’s fine to disagree on these forums. That said, personal attacks, hate speech and libelous content will not be allowed. Users who fail to comply with this rule will be banned. Users are encouraged to use the “Report” button to inform us of such content.

5. Respect the Admins and Mods: The forum administrators and moderators are here to keep the forums safe, sane, and secure. Do not harass or intentionally annoy them, and if they ask you to do something, please do it. Likewise, please do not “backseat mod,” as we know our own rules and are more than capable of enforcing them. If you do not like the mods or the moderation, feel free to not post here.

6. Use the Private Message option: If you want to communicate something to another user which is not suitable for the forums, please PM them rather than posting the content where everyone can see it. In particular, raging “flame war” arguments and links to sites with questionable content are ideal for PMs.

7. Keep post topics relevant: This subcategory is for discussion aboutpets. If you’d like to talk about some other topic, please post it in the relevant subcategory. If there’s not a category that fits, post it in the General Discussion section.
