US doctors worried suspect was ‘psychotic:’ report
Published: Wednesday November 11, 2009

US military doctors had worried that the suspected gunman in the Fort Hood shootings was “psychotic” and unstable but did not seek to sack him, National Public Radio reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed officials.

Psychiatrists and medical officials who oversaw Major Nidal Hasan, accused of opening fire on fellow soldiers at the Fort Hood base in Texas last week, held a series of meetings between the spring of 2008 and the spring of this year to discuss serious concerns about his work and his behavior, NPR reported.

“Put it this way. Everybody felt that if you were deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, you would not want Nidal Hasan in your fox hole,” one official was quoted as saying.

One official who participated in the conversations had reportedly told colleagues that he was concerned Hasan might leak secret military information to Islamic extremists if he was assigned to Iraq or Afghanistan, NPR said.

Another official “wondered aloud” to colleagues whether Hasan might be capable of killing fellow soldiers in the same way a Muslim sergeant in 2003 had set off grenades at a base in Kuwait and claimed the lives to two comrades, the radio reported.

The officials who discussed Hasan’s status were not aware—as some top Walter Reed hospital officials were—that intelligence agencies had been tracking Hasan’s e-mails to a radical Islamic cleric since December 2008, NPR said.

The NPR report cited interviews with several officials from Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Maryland.

Officials considered kicking Hasan out of the program but chose not to partly because sacking a doctor is a “cumbersome and lengthy” process that involves hearings and potential legal conflict, sources told NPR.

Officials also believed they lacked solid evidence that Hasan was unstable and were concerned they could be accused of discriminating against him because of his Islamic identity or views.

With Hasan due to leave Walter Reed after six years and transfer to Fort Hood in Texas, officials thought the larger psychiatric staff at that army base would be better placed to provide support to Hasan and to monitor him, according to NPR.

The army psychiatrist and practicing Muslim is accused of killing 13 people in Thursday’s shooting spree at Fort Hood.

Vatican Holds Conference on Extraterrestrial Life

Written by Nicholos Wethington ShareThis

The Pontifical Academy of Sciences held a “study week” to explore the question of the existence of extraterrestials. Image Credit: The VaticanThough it may seem an unlikely location to happen upon a conference on astrobiology, the Vatican recently held a “study week” of over 30 astronomers, biologists, geologists and religious leaders to discuss the question of the existence of extraterrestrials. This follows the statement made last year by the Pope’s chief astronomer, Father Gabriel Funes, that the existence of extraterrestrials does not preclude a belief in God, and that it’s a question to be explored by the Catholic Church. The event, put on by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, took place at the Casina Pio IV on the Vatican grounds from November 6-11.

The conference was meant to focus on the scientific perspective on the subject of the existence of extraterrestrial life, and pulled in perspectives from atheist scientists and Catholic leaders alike. It was split into eight different segments, starting with a topics about life here on Earth such as the origins of life, the Earth’s habitability through time, and the environment and genomes. Then the detection of life elsewhere, search strategies for extrasolar planets, the formation and properties of extrasolar planets was discussed, culminating in the last segment, intelligence elsewhere and ‘shadow life’ – life with a biochemistry completely different than that found on Earth.

Speakers at the event included notable physicist Paul Davies and Jill C. Tarter, the Director of the Center for SETI Research. Numerous astrobiologists and astronomers researching extrasolar planets also were in attendance to give lectures. The whole series of speech abstracts and a list of participants is available in a brochure on the Vatican site, here.

The event was held to mark the International Year of Astronomy, and the participants hope to collect the lectures into a book. Father Gabriel Funes, the chief astronomer of the Vatican, said in an interview to the Vatican paper, Osservatore Romano last year:

A recent letter to the editor about mainstream religion, paganism, atheism and the troubles between them sparked a rather spirited discussion on our blogs. Since the discussions tend to wind down after the original post gets rotated off the front page, and I thought I’d make a home for the same topic on the blogs.

Given the history of discussing religion on the internet, this was probably a very bad idea. People take their belief systems VERY, VERY seriously, and it’s generally not a topic that veers into name calling at the drop of a dismissive adjective.

Since I’ve already stated my case on the blogs, I’m going to try to stay out of this one as anything other than as a moderator. If someone is getting too hostile or veering into libel or otherwise violating the forum rules, please use the report button to let us know.

That said, be civil and have fun discussing the ever-controversial topics of religion, myth, belief, superstition, faith and dogma.

If only all kids were this smart. One line from Lennon’s Imagine could come true.

Kid hates going to church that much he steals a car
The Weber County Sheriff’s Office has released dash-cam video of a 7-year-old boy who went to great lengths to get out of going to church. He took the family car and led police on a low-speed chase. The boy told deputies it was just too hot to go to church, so he went for a joyride. His parents had no idea their car and their child was missing. “People in the neighborhood are talking about this,” said Weber County sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Bell. A quiet Sunday morning in Plain City was disrupted by calls of an unusual, reckless driver. “They could tell there was a small, young driver in the car,” Bell said. Deputies found the car near the local high school and tailed it for 10 blocks, all while the driver weave in traffic lanes and blew through stop signs. “The deputies at one time had pulled up kinda close to him on the side and could see it was a very small person driving the car,” Bell said. Deputies say this dime-sized, delinquent driver maintained speeds up to 45 miles an hour even though he had some trouble reaching the pedals. “His speed was slow, but erratically; and so he would kind of scoot down lower to push on the gas and kinda sit up on the seat more to see right where he was going,” Bell said. And where he went, was home. That’s when deputies got a better look at who they were dealing with: a 7-year old boy whose feet were as quick as his caper. “Very unusual situation, very unusual. I mean, what can you say?” Bell said. Investigators say the boy is too young to charge with a crime. They just hope his parents keep a closer eye on him. http://smallbitsandpieces.blogspot.com/2009/07/kids-version-of-fast-and-furious.html

I have found this to be true repeatedly in my brief stay here on the planet..

Albert Einstein on Gandhi

“I believe that Gandhi’s views were the most enlightened of all the political men in our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence in fighting for our cause, but by non-participation in anything you believe is evil.”

yep, from the “Shelbyville Times”.

A humorously hypocritical and yet relevant conversation on “Faith” in America.

I liked this quote the best as it seems to imply that the people like Mark Foley are part of God’s plan to distract the sinners from the true believers.

There was a story of a farmer who kept asking a friend to taste his fruit, but the friend stated he had tasted the fruit that fell out by the fence and it was sour, the farmer replied that he had planted those on purpose to deter boys from getting the good fruit on the inside of the fence.

The phrase"I believe in God” has to be the most meaningless phrase used today, don’t get the wrong ideal my format is not changing.

The word GOD has become a blank canvas free for him or her to paint their on portrait of the divine while forgetting what the Word says about the God of all.

The Swiss theologian Karl Barth once said there are only two ways to attain knowledge of God:one was to begin with man and reason upward: the other is to begin with God and accept his relation to us. I agree!

In the Old Testament the psalmist contrasted idols witrh the God he came to know through a personal revelation.Notice the difference:

115:3 But our God [is] in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. 115:4 Their idols [are] silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 115:5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 115:6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: 115:7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. 115:8 They that make them are like unto them; [so is] every one that trusteth in them.

Psalms 115:3-8

We create our own ideal of God to fit our needs, some even change the Holy Word to give their God clout, change condemnation of a sin to make them feel less guilty, change the gender of God to give them better feelings.

People want a God who is more tolerant and less demanding and less judgmental here is a example:a man leaves his wife to live with another woman[very common today] he withdraws from his church friends, forms new ones in bars and sports complexes, he feels better associating with people who accepts his choices.

He wants to be affirmed rather than rebuked for the courage to leave his wife, People want a God who will not mess with the core of their lives.

The God of my health and wealth has become the God of the West as that has become the common message in today’s churches. Gloria Copeland wrote"The Word of God simply reaveals that lack and poverty are not in line with God’s will for the obedient….Allow the Holy Spirit to minister the truth to your Spirit until you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God’s will is prosperity” she means worldy riches, not spiritual riches!

Try preaching this to the third world countries, or even in the poor areas of our own town, and with the way the country is going financially, the whole country in the near future.

How can we believe this God when Jesus himself said in the following

8:20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air [have] nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay [his] head.

Matthew 8:20

or as Paul so well said in:

4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, [therewith] to be content.

Philippians 4:11

C.S Lewis once said” The bible says that God created man in his image now man attempts to return the favor”

God told Moses at the bush “I AM WHO I AM” NOT we could add the phrase ” not who you want me to be”.

To begin your journey for the God that created everything not the creation who created God the following verses start the jorney:

11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews 11:6

4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.

James 4:8

There was a story of a farmer who kept asking a friend to taste his fruit, but the friend stated he had tasted the fruit that fell out by the fence and it was sour, the farmer replied that he had planted those on purpose to deter boys from getting the good fruit on the inside of the fence.

On the outside there are some sour apples, conviction of sin, self denial, and purity, to keep off the hypocrites and mere religionist. but in the middle is the sweet fruit of God’s love.
