What I’m Doing Today

This:

Which, either disturbingly or intriguingly, includes this level. Where you play a deep cover operative with terrorists. Skip to the 1:40 mark:

You do have the option of skipping the level, and you can also play the level without killing any civilians, but needless to say, some folks have their panties in a bunch over it.
For myself, I think it’s a brilliant move the part of the developer. It certainly gives new meaning to the word “immersion” and many games these days are trying to incorporate a “karma” decision where the player can become good or evil.
Although I’m certain plenty of desensitized younger players will gleefully mow down the innocents (er, as seen by the above gamer), I’m pretty certain I’ll play the level without firing a single shot. I’ll have a better formed opinion once I play the level.
One thing I’m certain of: my 9 year old ain’t coming near this game.

What do you think?

A haunted house makes no secret of the fact it’s not pleased with its new tenants in this independent tale of supernatural horror. Katie (Katie Featherson) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are a twentysomething couple who’ve just moved into a new home in San Diego, CA. Katie has an interest in the paranormal and believes that malevolent spirits have been following her since childhood, though Micah is not so easily convinced. However, after several nights of loud noises and strange happenings, Micah starts to agree with Katie that some sort of ghost may have followed them to the new home. After a paranormal researcher tells the couple he can’t help them, Micah decides to take control of the situation and sets up a battery of video cameras so that if a spirit manifests itself, he can capture its behavior on tape. Once the surveillance cameras are in place, Katie and Micah bring in a Ouija board in an effort to talk to the spirits, a move that deeply offends the ghosts. Paranormal Activity was the first feature film from writer and director Oren Peli. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Dumpster Diving

Tat brought it up. Asheville used to have some great dumpsters. but not so much in the last few years, with more people hitting fewer and fewer unlocked dumpsters. (that’s right, they lock up the trash!)

But, damn, back in the day… asheville had some great dumpsters. Fresh Market, ingles on tunnel road, amazing savings (or whatever it was then), even the co-op… and the mother-lode was certainly Earth Fare. Hot jeesus on a bag of greens, those were good times to be a dropout.

For a brief period of time i lived in a gully in chapel hill, and i gotta say, the dumpsters on campus were some of the best i ever hit. more fresh sandwhiches than i could ever eat.

In my searches, spartanburg never seemed to have any good ones.

So my lady’s parents surprised us with a free cruise to Jamaica (somewhere we were planning on going to next year) and the Caymans.

I’m sure that there will be parts about this cruise that will be fun, but am I wrong for feeling bad about this? Not because it was a gift, but I’m sure there’s something hellishly evil about these cruises that I’m missing out on.

So, educate me, people.

Motorcycles

I have a deep, passionate love affair with motorcycles. Riding them. Looking at them. Hearing them. Taking them apart and putting them back together. They are the most amazing, functional art.

My mom never let me have one growing up, so one of the first things I did when I got outta the house was buy one. A Honda Nighthawk 250. It was black and beautiful and all mine. But I didn’t know how to ride it. A buddy of mine rode it home for me and I proceeded to crash it all over the neighborhood teaching myself how to use the clutch, shifter, and brakes. It didn’t take long for me to out grow it….

15 years later I’m on bike #7. It’s a Triumph Sprint that has a blown head gasket and is currently sitting in a friend’s shop in hundreds of pieces while I wait for some valve guides. But bike #8 is already lined up to settle a debt with a friend. BMW R1150R. Awesome. I rode it to Denver and St. Paul last summer. And it handles the twisties with aplomb. We live in motorcycle heaven. People come from literally all over the world to ride the roads that I take to the grocery store.

How about ya’ll? Watcha ride? Where do ya ride? Who taught ya?

Let’s talk bikes….

What’s the best fighting game?

I’m playing Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 right now, and it’s easily the best overall fighting game I’ve ever played. It’s looks great, but it’s also very much a Dragon Ball Z-feeling game in every respect, being just the right mix of goofy and violent. The combat is fast, furious and just cartoonish enough for it to feel right, and the gameplay is fairly deep for a brawler if you’re into the RPG elements.

Tell me this doesn’t look fun ...

But that’s a PS2 game, and I don’t know what’s on the market now because I don’t have a current console. What’s the best fisticuffs game out there these days?
