Wii Fit-ness

3 things: In my august (more like September) years i need to exercise; I already play video games; and I’m motivated by geekiness; So, i bought a Wii with the Wii Fit board and have been using it daily for 3 weeks. All despite the questionable statistics that say that 60% of Wii Fit purchasers use it several times and then give up (if that were true there’d be a lot more Wii Fit boards on Craigslist). I really get into it. I’ve done yoga before and had it fade away, fitness clubs and let them lapse and I just don’t hike enough for regular toning.

When i did the Lighten Up 4 Life challenge i lost 22 lbs by using the SparkPeople website that helped me keep track, chart and anticipate changes. People don’t much motivate me except perhaps my dear sweet helen, and self-help books are for people to make money on. Looking good can’t motivate me because it’s too late. Me? I am a child of the office - charts and games and understanding bosses motivate me and the Wii Fit has all of this. So, for now at least, it’s working and i look forward to it every day. It keeps me focused on my balance, posture and weight and i get to see the little progress that minutiae provides.

Are there any other people out there using this, or other fitness technologies?

Pooping

How often does everyone poop? I like to think of pooping as the centerpiece to my day.

Does anyone have trouble pooping when they go out of town? I once went 6 days without pooping on a cross country trip.

I know that many people and businesses in the area are registered in the Mission Hospital’s program Lighten Up 4 Life, like Ashevegas/Jason and i.

It’s the first time i’ve dieted in my life and have found 2 wonderful web resources for keeping track and keeping ON track. The first will keep track of all your data. You put in what you’ve eaten and it adds up the total calories, fat, carbs, etc and the second is a comprehensive website for finding almost any food we consume and its nutrition label.

http://www.sparkpeople.com/

http://www.calorie-count.com/

Any other LU4L or new-year’s-resolution dieters out there? What are your weapons for keeping on track?

Stroke? remember S.T.R.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the ef fects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.

T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE(Coherently) ( I.e. It is sunny out today)

R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

NOTE: Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person t o ‘stick’ out their tongue. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Actually, if we would all smile, talk in sentences and do a bit of minimal exercise, it would be a good thing. But if someone stumbles, falls, seems confused or displays behavior that isn’t normal to them, remember STR

Hi Asheville

Like to get some feedback on the health clubs and gyms in the area you belong to.

I belonged to the now defunk Peak Gym (used to be The Spa Health Club) in WestGate Mall
since the early ‘90s.

Interested in who are:
-cleanest
-up to date equipment
-have swimming pool/saunas?
-classes (yoga, spinning, exercise)
-best gym for singles
-best gym for families
-most helpful, friendliest
-times they are open

What do you like/dislike about the gyms in the area.
Looking forward to your input.
Tips for quitting smoking?

Has anyone out there successfully quit smoking? How did you do it?

“Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.”—Mark Twain

Intro and rules: Read before posting

This forum is for discussion about local health care, alternative health care and related topics. Curious about a new practice in holistic medicine? Looking for personal insight into Eastern medicine? Hoping to find the right doctor? Post about it here.

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike many of our other forums, this subcategory deals with potentially life-threatening issues. So, for your own sake, please get the advice of a medical professional for any health-related problem, and don’t rely solely on the experience and anecdotes of forum posters for your health-care concerns.

Also, please keep the Xpress forum rules in mind when posting. These are:

1. Think before you post: Seriously. We’re trying to spark interesting conversations about local topics here, and the last thing we want is to flood the board with thoughtless content. This includes the needless repeating of catchphrases, redundant posting of internet memes and posts with little original content.

2. No, SPAMming, no malicious links, no illegal downloads: It’s fine to discuss a business or service, but if the conversation veers into self-promotion, we’ll close down the thread. Depending on the nature of the post, we may also ban the user. Likewise, it’s fine to post links to relevant topics, but linking to any URL with spyware, malicious code, pornography or illegal download sites is strictly forbidden, and will likely get your IP address banned. Think before you post!

3. Use the “NWS” warning for questionable material: If you are unsure if a link is suitable for all users, please mark the link as “Not Work Safe” or “NWS” before and after the URL. This simply indicates that the link connects to a site or content that most people would get in trouble for looking at while at work.

4. Be civil: It’s fine to disagree on these forums. That said, personal attacks, hate speech and libelous content will not be allowed. Users who fail to comply with this rule will be banned. Users are encouraged to use the “Report” button to inform us of such content.

5. Respect the Admins and Mods: The forum administrators and moderators are here to keep the forums safe, sane, and secure. Do not harass or intentionally annoy them, and if they ask you to do something, please do it. Likewise, please do not “backseat mod,” as we know our own rules and are more than capable of enforcing them. If you do not like the mods or the moderation, feel free to not post here.

6. Use the Private Message option: If you want to communicate something to another user which is not suitable for the forums, please PM them rather than posting the content where everyone can see it. In particular, raging “flame war” arguments and links to sites with questionable content are ideal for PMs.

7. Keep post topics relevant: This subcategory is for discussion about local heathcare. If you’d like to talk about some other topic, please post it in the relevant subcategory. If there’s not a category that fits, post it in the General Discussion section.
