Both Ashevegas and i tried to use the <youtube> ‘button’ to get a video to appear - has this function been disabled? I tried the embed html as is and subsets of this html.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this, Zen, but I’ve been on vacation for the last week and didn’t see this until today. I suspect the problem is that you’re entering the entire url, instead of just the YouTube video-ID, string.
So, when the dialogue box pops up, you’re likely putting this in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDx_6LzfZ5Y ; but you’re really wanting to put in just the bit after the equal sign. (that is, gDx_6LzfZ5Y).
For example ...
That should fix it, and the situation should be more-or-less the same with the GoogleVideo string. If this is too awkward or counter-intuitive, let me know and I’ll talk to our resident Web genius to see if we have other, more user-friendly options.
Letters to the Editor -
anyone know how I can get access to archives from this current 2008 year?
That’s a good question and one I’ve wondered about myself. Unless you have saved a link somewhere to some particular letter, or it happens to be listed as one with many comments, there’s no way that I’m aware of to find any others for the current year after the week it came out has expired.

By the time you read this, it’ll probably be fixed, but we had forgotten to add a link to the page layout for the 2008 letters archives. You can find all the letters we’ve published this year at the URL below.
Access to all the 2008 comments is certainly an improvement, that it shouldn’t replace the “Most Commented” section, imo. There it was easy to monitor “hot” topics for new comments. Now they’ll just be buried with all the other archives.

Evidently, the “Most Commented” thing was killed off recently because of something involving outdated scripting. The web guy says he’s working on a new version of it, so it should be back eventually.
Why is it that whenever the name of something that consists of letters and an ampersand are entered in a post, it always comes out with a semi-colon after it? Example: S&W;, AT&T;. (I’m not typing those semi-colons in that you see,)

That’s a weird glitch in an automated process, and I think it relates to how we used to process A(and)E stories. I’ll see what can be done about it.
UPDATE: According to the webmaster, this appears to be an issue deep in the code, and it looks like it’ll be hard to fix. In the interim, however, you can get around it by never putting an ampersand next to another character. A & E shows up fine, but A&E;prompts a semicolon. Weird and annoying, sure, but ultimately harmless.
