Being a poor writer (along with aborting my planned move to Athens, GA) has delayed my dog owning. Rest assured that I will own one of the little waggly bastards soon enough.
When you do decide to go ahead with it...another option from just going to the local pound (not that that’s not a great thing to do), but if you wanted a specific breed or something...might be to check around a bit on petfinder.com.
They have lots of “rescue” group links for different breeds, sizes, etc. etc.
I think that there’s a few online services like that out there.....just know a bit more (all good) about this one.
Almost all the companion animals available at petfinder have had all their shots and such and are fixed.
a dog:
needs lots of time and space to be still an dog and run
needs lots of food, vacinations and stuff like this
must fit in the living situation and for me they are just poor if somebody hold them in apartmenthouses in an city
so, if you have lots of time, money, space and alwas an place where to bring in case you make an holidy trip or such… great idea...smile… if you just feel lonely and need somebody around you… go with dating, thats easier to handle...smile
May I suggest a rat terrier? I’ve had a mini rat terrier for four years now and she is an absolute delight. Here’s a link to the kennel mom I got her from.
PS, these dogs come in four basic size ranges from toy to what is called Deckers that run up to 40#. I’ve had big dogs I loved but this little critter is just the most personable of any, a laugh a minute.
Jason: something to consider if you haven’t settled on a type of dog yet. The bigger they are, the more expensive. Obviously more food, but also more medicine for routine and other vet visits. Sedative/anesthesia particularly, as well as monthly heartworm and flea/tick stuff.
That said, I’ve raised my 80-pound rottie from 6 weeks old, and she’s 4 and a half now. Love her fiercely. She’s not a brat, but she’s definately spoiled.
I recommend you get a dog that can drive. Just imagine on those occasions when you’ve crushed the last can of a twelve pack on your forehead, you can look at your new best friend and say, “Get the keys baby we’re going to the store”.
If you get a dog, or any pet for that matter, please make sure you give it the time and care it needs and deserves. My pet cockatoo for instance is treated as a member of the family.
Don’t just throw the dog, or dogs in the backyard and ignore the howling and barking as it irritates your neighbors, only occasionally coming out to yell at the dogs when they finally annoy you as well.
Or throw your cats out so they breed wildly and hide underneath your neighbors house and cause constant problems.
Unfair and cruel to the animals, and unfair and irresponsible toward your neighbors.
