Holy Crap. I just saw this on TCM the other night. it is, possibly, one of the best movies I have ever seen. Carol Channing singing the theme song at the end is STUCK in my head on repeat. Groucho Marx as God? Jackie Gleason tripping balls? Carol Channing stripping out of a dress that comes off like a lemon-rind?

Glorious!

Crazy as Groucho as God smokes pumpkin and Burgess Merideth proves he can act despite probably never having tried acid.  I think Harry Nilsson deliberately provided the dumbest most zany songs of his career here, making Popeye seem as serious and crafted as an Italian Opera.  And i love Nilsson.  This is a movie you don’t need MST3K’s Joel, Tom Servo and Crow to make it completely weird.  Thanks for that!!!!!!!

quote:
Harry: Tony, it looks like one of them hippies!
Tony Banks: That’s right… and no hippie is gonna make it with my daughter.
Darlene Banks: Daddy, he wasn’t going to… I’m not sure *he* even knows what he wants.
Tony Banks: What is he, a faggot?

p.s. trivia:

Otto Preminger originally wanted Bob Dylan to score the movie. He invited Dylan and his wife to screening a rough cut of the movie in his own Hollywood mansion. After the screening, Dylan surprised everybody from his entourage, who thought the film was a disaster, by requesting a second screening but at one condition: he wanted to be left alone with his wife in the house during it. Preminger happily obliged, convinced that Dylan would accept the job. However, Dylan showed no further interest in the movie. He acknowledged later that he and his wife weren’t interested at all by ‘Skidoo’ but they had loved so much the mansion style that they had requested this second screening to freely explore the mansion, write down what they liked and take inspiration for their own house.

This movie is definitely a weird one.  Put it up there with MYRA BRECKINRIDGE as Hollywood trying real hard to “get it” but falling flat on their faces.

I think the Preminger estate tries to block any releases or showings, but I might be wrong.  As far as I’m concerned, he only did one good film:  THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM.

oh, ralphy. the ways of the modern world must cuase you such consternation.

it is on google video, available for free download.  So i would imagine if there was any ‘copyright violation’ going on, google would be the guilty party.

oh, ralphy....

But he does have a point. We aren’t hosting it, obviously, and I doubt we’d have any actual liability, but maybe it’s not such a good idea to have the media playing directly on our site.

I’ll leave up the URL, but I’m pulling the media-player window.

right, Steve… just because it’s on Google does not mean it’s legit (see all the suits against YouTube by the big Hollywood studios).

but, Atruth, feel free to ignore my advice… just because I’ve been publishing for over 30 years and have, by necessity, pretty well memorized U.S. Code, Title 17 does not necessarily mean I know everything about copyright law and intellectual property rights, but perhaps just enough to maybe save you big bucks.

Simply because you THINK someone has done their homework does not absolve you or MountainX of liability.

But… while many of the older movies ARE public domain now, this one seems pretty recent to be so.

i heard that if you play agent 23’s “breakin’ Cages” while watching “Skidoo” with the sound off, it matches up perfectly.

Anyone else tried this?
