Isn’t Alan Moore’s Watchmen just ducky? The movie version is coming out next summer. Discuss.

Entertainment Weekly has a cover story on it this week (or last week). The way they talked, it’s going to have to be cut way down for a general release, but I’m hoping for an extended director’s cut with all the footage left in 9a la the Lord of the Rings trilogy). I guess that means I’m going to have to wait until next fall for the movie adaptation I want to see to come out.

That doesn’t surprise me. It’s a weighty tale for a comic book, and it jumps around over 40-some years. I do hope the film is worth it, and that, if it is, an extended version is provided for the geeks like me who would dig seeing a truly epic version of the story on screen.

The problem is that I don’t know how it’s going to work as a movie. Snyder makes pretty movies, but I don’t know if they are good or not.

Either way I’m going to go see it opening day.

If they cut out all the non-hero subplot stuff and documentation, I think it could be done justice. The book is fairly cinematic. But, even then, it’d still need to be a three-hour movie to fit in the plot. The trailer looks good, but who knows if Snyder will “get” the book?

I think he “gets” the pretty pictures. Because that’s all I see in the trailer. I know for a fact that the Pirate sequence is going to come out as it’s own straight to DVD animated movie alongside the theatrical release of the movie.

They are going to release the “Tales of the Black Freighter” comic-within-a-comic story as a separate movie, so that should take a lot of subplot stuff.

Like a short feature before the film?

Point taken, Jason. After a day’s worth of editing, I’m surprised I can still comprehend words.

The trailer for it was supposed to be shown with the Dark Knight, but I was disappointed when it never showed up at the viewing I attended.

You can see it online, however:

I liked the trailer. The song was fitting, and there were several scenes that were obviously taken directly from the comic. I’m hesitantly hopeful.

My only big concern is how obviously CGI Dr. Manhattan looks.

I own the tpb but have yet to read it (yes, that’s bad). With the movie coming out, I’m definitely going to be sure to have read it before then since I’m sure the book is much better. :)
