I’ve seen a few people I know doing this as well.
Huge apartment buildings will be empty with no one to buy them for $250,000 and up. I’ll come back in about 5 years when those apartments are down to about $50,000 and no one wants them anymore.

Are you sure you still live in Asheville? It’s more like yuppie-ville, as far as the eye can see. Hippies are so late ‘90s.
Even so, bent seems to imply that “scruffy hippies” are not artistic or creative. I don’t see how someone’s artistic or creative talents or accomplishments can be judged merely by the person’s outward appearance.

Just because someone smells, lays on the sidewalk and begs for beer money,does not make them an “artist”. Yes lots of yuppies here. But the hippiest stink. Yuppies at least bathe.

It also doesn’t make them hippies. It makes them, I’m guessing, vagrants. Not everyone with a beard is a hippie, you know. I think you’ve mixed up your stereotypes.
How is an Artist ( I’m not really sure what qualifies one as such, and you didn’t really define what you meant) any different from anyone else? The more important question is, and should be, is it still possible for middle and lower class folks (like myself) to raise a family here? As fliss aptly noted in her above post, it is very hard for edumacated folks to find good jobs here...the brain drain is on.

well, as an new artist in town, i moved in april from oklahoma city to asheville, because the artists. i see asheville as an good possibility but not cheap but possible in handle and pay.
but people have to look where to move and where to rent an artspace.
as i can tell from pretty old historic european arts places… the artist with their electric life and relaxed art most of the time bringes the younger money people around who apreciate the artist around. there follows the money making people who first rent and buy cheap and than build the things up in an (different) “better” style and rent out expencife.
you can say pretty much that the money follows the artists and that is why many artist places after a while are just super expencife places without artist...smile… than the gae starts again, the artist will find a n nw place and the first people with more money follow until some years later it is not anymore affordable for the artists and they move…
as sad as it is, it brings the art around...smile ... in oklahoma they told me that oklahoma is one of the cheapest places in the US you can life, but i had to spend more money there thn here, so, as an newbie in town, i think it is (still) ok, as somebody who seen all the changes… it may gets pretty expencife now
As a freelance writer, I was excited about moving to the area. But, I ended up getting an apartment in Hendersonville as it’s a bit more affordable than Asheville I found.

True, but it can be worth the price if you’re in the right community, particularly if there are lots of other creative types around to hang out with. How close are you to downtown Hendersonville?

I am 10 minutes from downtown. In fact, my FT job is in downtown Hendersonville. While I like HVL, I definitely plan on moving to Bumcombe county next summer to be closer to Asheville.
