Did anybody see Colbert’s parody on the stimulus package tonight? It was a good one I thought….one idea stuck out at me, the guys that didn’t vote for the bill, their constituants don’t get any of the money to their communities….
How did Shuler end up voting?

Shuler voted no, and rightly so. He was one of 11 Dems to vote against. Should we move this thread? Because after the comments at ScruHoo, I’m ready to fight.

Bobaloo, What can be done, in the near term to stimulate the economy?? I would love to hear some good ideas on this cuz our politicians are out of decent ideas and keep throwing dough at the fat cats that got us in this mess….IMHO

I wish Americans could get tax breaks on manufacture of ANYTHING, we seem to not make stuff anymore, In NC- textiles are long gone, furniture manufacture is gone, selling it from Indonesia or Mexico still happens, Tobacco is gone, we need to reclaim the manufacturing base that made this country.

We have a few choices

I have a great idea ... lets do a reverse mortgage on Alaska ... get 50 trillion to pay off the debt ... and as the economy improves start paying off the mortgage until we own it out right again ....

we always have the option of turning into a natural resouce based economy ... sell off our natural resources until we are debt free ...

become a truly service/ entertainment based economy ... making the US a national theme park experience .... all americans become authentic americans serving food and beverages to the worlds tourists ...

create a phony war and have people act like refugees in order to get aid packages dropped….

Screw the economy.

Let’s start talking about a world where people dont need to exploit resources in order to eke out an existence, all to the benefit of massive multinational corporations.

somehow, we need to regain our manufacturing and innovation base….

So, we need another World War in which the manufacturing base of all our nation’s competitors are destroyed, giving a healthy advantage to American-based companies?

Good point. I guess thats cuz we dont have to manufacture ships and stuff anymore.

My point, though, was that america’s “manufacturing base” was so successful after ww2, not necessarily because of “American ingenuity” as much as no competition after WW2. I’m not really into false sentimentality.
