Is there a free Photoshop or similar program out there for a Mac?  I’ve searched a few different times, but don’t feel I’m getting anywhere.

I guess you’ve already heard of GIMP then?

It’s not bad. It’s a little counterintuitive if you’re used to Photoshop, but as tatttTms points out, it can be made significantly less confusing with the GIMPshop addon. It’s also not as friendly of a program, but there’s quite a lot of documentation out there to make up for that.

brebro can probably give you more insight, but it seems to me that it’s not really in the same league as the last several Photoshop versions. It reminds me of Photoshop 7, rather than anything from the CS line.

I’ve never actually used any of those other programs, as Photoshop has always been a tax-deductible expense for me, but from online reviews, GIMP seems to be a good free alternative and if tattTms recommends paintnet, it must be good too.

gimp works fine
gimpshop is not always the most stable every moment of every day ... since it is a knid of mashup overlay using new labels to match photoshop, you may not always have the result you expect 100 percent of the time .... having said that I still use it ....

I try and use as much open source as i can ...

i have photoscape on one of my systems, but haven’t really tried it yet

MacHEIST NanoBundle!

We like to think of our job as helping to introduce the great indie software out there to you guys, the Mac users. Over the past 3 years, between heist prize apps and discounted software bundles, we’ve distributed over 4 million software licenses to hundreds of thousands of Mac users around the world.

But as we stared at the this year’s bundle, thinking of ways to reach as many Mac users as we could with this collection of amazing apps, we had a crazy idea. The kind of idea that at first seems preposterous. An idea that involved, just this once, removing the only remaining barrier of any significance: the bundle’s price.

Say hello to the MacHeist nanoBundle. It’s the same bundle of quality Mac software that you know and love… but it’s entirely free.

Download it. Enjoy it. And tell your friends about it, because it’ll be gone in under a week, never to return again. Grab it now!

They’ve decided to just give away this bundle of apps in what appears to be a move to encourage their users to come back for more. 6 great mac apps for zero dollars. That’s my kind of deal. There are only 6 more days to download this bundle, so go grab it after checking out the loot:

Shove Box—A reminder, organization, gotta-get-it-done application that sits in your menu bar. You can then drag things like text, URLs, images… possibly anything to the menu bar app and it’ll save it for later. When you get some free time, you can go back through and see what you have. There’s an iPhone companion app as well.

WriteRoom—A simple writing application that removes all of the typical distractions from your writing sessions. It makes the text window full screen, completely cutting off the rest of the world from your mind—if you so choose. It still has simple tools like word count, background/text color adjustments… but definitely keeps you focused.

Twitterrific—Set up your Twitter account and tweet away with the easiest solution imaginable.

TinyGrab—Is a screen capture maniac’s dream. It allows you to use the standard command-shift-4 and select part of your screen or hit spacebar to capture a specific window. The kicker: it uploads it directly to your own FTP server and puts the URL in your clipboard so you can paste it in Facebook, Twitter, email, IM… whatever your pleasure.

Hordes of Orcs — Innovative desktop tower defense game. Everything is in 3D, there are 6 different game variations and let’s not forget tower defense.

Mariner Write—This is a word processor with features you need but none of the “bloat” found in other applications *cough* Microsoft *cough.* Of course, it will open and save Word documents, as well as other formats.
