Marvel, but with their track record I couldn’t possibly start some fanboy flaming of DC.
The Secret Invasion event was too simplistic with waaaay too much buildup for such a anti-climactic ending. The plus side is that the aftermath, Dark Reign, is gearing up to make the Marvel U more interesting than it’s been in maybe decades.
DC was really picking up steam for me. I was enjoying the core characters and trying to build up some background to really get into Final Crisis. Then I read Final Crisis which is still a muddled mess resulting from a self-indulgent writer who gets too much leeway with DC editors. Add to that Batman RIP and they pretty much screwed themselves.
Right now, anything with Brubaker (especially the Criminal series and Incognito) Abnett and Lanning and Matt Fraction does it for me.
It’s apples and oranges. Brubaker is the writer that Bendis dreams of being, while Morrison is doing huge cosmic sci fi and new testament infused morality plays. It’s like comparing Asheville to New York City or Thomas to Ralph Roberts.
I’m usually in the Marvel camp, although I have a soft-spot for the Vertigo imprint on the DC side. DC has this modern-day gods kind of thing going on, which I can’t really get excited by. Marvel, while flawed, has characters that are inherently flawed, and often times aren’t really all that heroic. Even Peter Parker doesn’t really WANT to be a hero half the time.
Compare that with, say, Superman, who is basically a hero by definition. Even Captain America—the closest moral equivalent on the Marvel side—had lots of conflicted feelings, and was essentially a man out of place in the modern world. And he didn’t even have superpowers except for not aging.
I’m now going to say the most cliche thing I can: I like Batman, because he’s the most Marvel-like of the DC characters.
All that said, I also think DC generally has less meandering story lines. Much tighter than Marvel on the whole. But also less compelling, largely because the characters don’t interest me as much.
Good point. Morality plays quite a bit with Brubaker as well, although on a completely different scale.
Also, very true about BMB. What Bendis, and Morrison to a point, prove most of all is that good comic writers need good editors. When Bendis is allowed free reign his self-importance meter maxes out.
Final Crisis is still a muddled piece of shite though.

The thing is that DC has given their characters a bit of conflict. Superman is no longer a perfect man, he’s a man who feels like he’s on the outside because he’s the last of his people. Now his people are back, and they don’t want him either because he’s too much of an Earthling. It’s good stuff.
You are insane. Final Crisis was the best event outside of the Sinestro Corps War in the last 5 years.
I can appreciate the fact that my limited knowledge of Kirby’s New Gods may have hindered my enjoyment, but that doesn’t change the fact that the story telling was completely scattered and the action nearly indecipherable. I see the potential in the event, but ultimately it was completely meaningless for the DCU and pretty much every character involved except for Batman.
Speaking of which, the real breaking point for the series was Batman’s inexplicable decision to reveal himself to Darkseid for some light conversation, thus giving Darkseid the opportunity to send Batman to a cave via his special lightning. Or something.
Best event in the past five years? Annihilation, hands down.

See, bobaloo is “uninformed”, even when it comes to comics. :-)
I would remind you, young man, that Jason launched a personal attack on me. I will continue to complain about it endlessly.
Look, You whipper-snapper, if you insist on picking fights on here, then I will bring it to you. I have no need for your psycho-analysis, even though I am happy to provide you with my own. It would appear you are attempting to compensate for your lack of father-figure in your life, and if you just took the time to understand that I am infinitely wiser than you, based on my superficial understanding of the situation, mixed generously with my need to prostelitize to people who have repeatedly proven to be entirely uninterested, then you might pay me the respect i think i deserve.
I consider this forum my last stand for my unwanted advice on irrelevent matters, and if i cant be heard, then i will stage a massive tantrum only to return in a few days pretending like I didnt just behave like a 3 year old.
