I needed a drink in me to loosen up. Everyone bombs their first time.  Plus, the show wasn’t really “about” me. I was just kind of sitting there. I needed some questions to get myself going.

Also a Jack and Coke.

There’s an open mic in Asheville for stand-up on Tuesdays at the New French Bar @ 8:30 pm.
Nearby, there’s a stand-up open mic on Mondays in Greenville, SC, at Coffee Underground at 8pm.
There’s another open mic in Greenville on Wednesdays @ Mojito’s restaurant @ 10 pm.
Knoxville’s comedy club is under new ownership (Side-splitter’s Comedy Club) and has open mics throughout the month.
Charlotte has quite a few open mics throughout the week if you’re down in that area.

Anyone going to the new comedy club this weekend? I’ve got tix to the 8 pm show, it’ll be interesting seeing 1st-ever performance there. I hear the venue is pretty swank. Anyone seen it yet?

Well, I just now have seen it, for the first time, on opening night, exactly as I implied. I’m not promoting for anyone. This is a stand-up comedy thread, correct? A comedy club did just open in downtown Asheville. It was a relevant, and earnest, question/forum post. I understand your being skeptical/cynical. It’s certainly not unheard of for someone to anonymously schill for their own business, or their uncle’s business, or whatever.

Mayor Bellamy made it to the show, and other than expected opening night glitches (service a little off at first, but got up to speed), we had a really good time. Melanie Maloy MC’d, really good with the crowd and fun to watch, and the headliner (Lachlan Patterson) was hilarious. They had a magician walking around to the tables before anything got started and doing tricks (if you wanted). Sounds like it could be corny, but when you’re just waiting for audience to file in, sit down, order drinks, etc, it was a cool touch. Can’t remember last time I saw a magic trick, and they were actually pretty damn good.

Any go see Rick Shapiro? I heard he played Bobo, Grey Eagle and somewhere else (Admiral?)while he was here. Anyone witness any of this? How were his shows?

Yes (they populated the show with a lot of standups like Kristen Schaal and Arj Barker) and he was also in those local radio station commercials where he was the guy who said he had a radio station in his finger or something like that.

Speaking of Arj Barker, you ever seen his cartoon series “Arj and Poopy”? It’s basically his better stand-up bits, but with a farting cartoon cat. It works better than you might think, given the premise.

I always thought that the one thing the whole “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist” series was lacking, was some flatulence.

I haven’t seen his recent stuff, but he used to be brilliant circa 1991 or so.
