Let’s start a list of good TV shows to recommend to each other. I’ll start.

“Eastbound and Down”—Brilliant comedy about a washed-up pro-pitcher modeled on John Rocker.

“Flight of the Conchords”—Two struggling musicians from New Zealand try to make it in New York, kind of.

“The Office”—Because, even though it long ago jumped the shark, it’s still reasonably funny and moderately well written. And Pam. Can’t forget her.

“Battlestar Galactica”—Sure, it just ended two weeks ago. So what? It’s still worth watching if you haven’t seen it yet. Start at the beginning, though.

OK, that’s enough from me. Now it’s your turn. Recommend us up some TV, please.

i get the feeling Mad Men is dead in the water, which is a bummer, because it was really showing signs of improvement. AMC or whoever owned it really dropped the ball.

I forgot to mention Venture Brothers.  Although it’s a cartoon the last season was one of the best on television in years.

Rome, which I so wish had another season.

I know what you mean. But I’d rather have a show that was all-but flawless for two solid seasons than one that creaked along for the third. Rome becomes less turbulent after Octavian defeated Anthony, so it’d be kind of hard to find big, sweeping drama on the same level as the first two seasons. I wouldn’t mind a prequel examining Sulla’s reign, though. He was kind of the anti-Caesar. Or one that jumped ahead a few decades to the reign of Caligula, and his ultimate downfall.

I never could get into Flight of the Concords.

You’re not alone, and I’ve met tons of people who are kind of “meh” about it. I think there are moments of pure genius in it—the Hiphopapotamus and Rhymenocerous episode comes to mind—but I think it also has a very specific viewership in mind.

Tons of people love Arrested Development, but I’ve never found it to be all that funny, so I think I understand where you’re coming from.

What I really mean by that is that the first season should have taken two seasons to complete. It felt entirely too rushed for my taste. They left out so many details, but I suspect that was both budgetary and because they didn’t know if they’d have a second season.

I agree. They really could have stretched it out, and at least given Caesar a second season. The war with Pompey Magnus should have been the whole of the first season, ending with his death in Egypt. There’s so much that could have been covered, even before Caesar returned from Gaul. I’d have liked to see something of the conflict with Vercingetorix, for instance.

They also glossed over so many of the political changes after Caesar became dictator, and really from only one side. They kept referring to how beloved Caesar was by the people, but never really showed why that was, or explained exactly how threatening those changes were to the status quo. Whole story arcs could have been written about that stuff. Not to mention all the stuff that barely gets addressed happening in Egypt at the time. It could easily have filled a season.

I was also dissappointed in how they handled Cicero in the second season, almost making him the apologist for the ruling class and a victim of the times. If you’ve ever read him, he was anything but that. I did get a rush when they quoted some of the choicer bits of his “Against Antony,” though.

But I can’t blame them for condensing it down to two lean-and-mean seasons. It was a ridiculously expensive show to make.
