Actually, his “real” name is Kanaan Warsame. “Kanaan” means traveler in Somali.
I imagine your thinking of N’aan.
Interestingly enough, i heard the other day that the somali coast is as long as the entire eastern seaboard of the US. Kinda hard to patrol that whole thing. And if what K’naan is saying is true, which it appears to be from what i can tell, in regards to companies dumping toxic waste on the african coast, then it puts the whole issue int a very different context than that which the Western Media puts it.
Oh, Companies have been doing that to Africa and parts of SE Asia for years. they dump all sort of garbage there. Here’s a good article on it from Slate
So the UN can send warships to protect these companies from so-called “pirates”, but cant send them to prevent these same companies from dumping toxic waste?
Gotta love the priorities of the West.
Yeah, the “pirates” got my sympathy on this issue. More power to ‘em.

I’d like to agree with you here, but the whole lex talionis theory of justice…well, as the saying goes, leaves us all blind. I would hope that somehow they could come up with some creative way to make their plight known, but most people aren’t listening, or at least the ones in power aren’t…so yadda yadda yadda we have more pirates.

The Somali coast according to a quick study on Google Earth is roughly 1750 miles long. In comparison the eastern seaboard if measured as a straight line from the tip of main on the Atlantic to the tip of Florida less the Keys is 1544 miles, oddly enough only a small portion of Nantucket Island stick out beyond that line into the Atlantic. The Atlantic sea coast and the tertiary bays, sounds and fjords would account for significantly more mileage than Somalia’s consistently straight featureless seacoast.

yeah, i know. but if i have to choose between powerful Western Business interests who turn a blind eye to illegal dumping of toxic waste and a bunch of sea gangsters, i’m gonna side with the sea gangstas. Before seeing that video above, I had never heard that aspect of the stroy, despite the flood of words on the issue in the last 6 months.
Go to Google Earth and see for yourself. Use the ruler function under the tool menu. It is obvious this is misinformation. There is no way that article’s statement can be substantiated, I’m betting.
What do you suppose would be the purpose of said “misinformation”?
I agree, though, when i heard it on the radio, it seemed quite unbelievable.
Edit: Judging from the definition of “Eastern Seaboard” supplied by Wiki, though, it really just seem to be about splitting hairs, since not necessarily all of the “East Coast” is considered in the definition of Seaboard. Take out, say, florida and maine, and the somali coast may very well be longer.
Like you said, if you measure the east coast it in a straight line, the numbers work. Which makes sense to me, since i doubt the navy feels the need to patrol every nook and cranny and fjörd when the pirates in question are more than likely a little further out at sea when they are hijacking said “legal pirates”.
I think the comparison is just to meant to give the geographically illiterate american a sense of how large that coast of eastern Africa is. Remember, most americans were raised on distorted maps that made N. America look significantly larger than it really is.
Why do the “civilized” get so offended when people fight back? Why are they surprised when the poor, destitute, disenfranchised, and oppressed actually raise up and strike at their tormentors?
Is it because they are pacifists? Do they abhor violence? Or is it because they identify so much with the power structure that they belong to and feel frightened by the possibilities?
If someone was disrespecting your very right to live, what would you do?
Take it?
Or fight back?
Another great article about the context of the situation….
