This is my first post in this section. Any advice on whether growing artichokes in WNC’s climate is a good idea? Not much of a green thumb type, but artichokes are my favorite veggie and I’d love to be able to grow some if it’s possible here. Thoughts?

I’m pretty sure they prefer a more “mediteranian” climate, but you may have some luck if you prep the soil properly and put them in a spot that is VERY well-drained. (somewhat sandy).

they dont want to sit in wet soil.

i’m pretty sure they are a relative of the thistle (?)

It is worth a try. The foliage alone makes it a nice looking plant in the garden even if it doesn’t bloom.

The thing is they bloom best in their second year and they are not cold hardy to this zone. You might get some bloom in the first year. We do have a long enough growing season, up to 150 days from seed. Start seed early or buy plants and plant out by the first of May and you could get some bloom by Oct 1 baring any hard freezes.

What we have in their favor is the cooler night time temps they prefer. You can also try to overwinter the crowns with a thick layer of mulch for the better second year bloom if they survive the winter.

It all amounts to a hill of beans.
