Should I go vegetarian for the summer?

Although I don’t eat much red meat these days, I’ve been thinking about giving up the flesh altogether for the summer in an attempt to slim down a little. This has been further influenced by the fact that my wife and I joined a CSA earlier this year, and will have oodles of vegetables to deal with every two weeks.

This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve gone vegetarian—I did it for the better part of a year, taking occasional weekend breaks to eat sushi—so I’m not exactly a noob. But I’m kind of on the fence about the idea, and need some kind of sarcastic nudging to make the decision. For the ease of conversation, let’s say I’ll be starting on May 1st, and will—just like last time—occasionally be eating fish, because fish is awesome.

I should clarify that there’s nothing ethical driving this decision, but rather it’s a purely dietary move: I’m not against eating animals, I’m just going to be inundated with plants soon, and thought I’d try to make the most of it. If you want to talk about animal rights, start your own thread and leave mine alone.

Your thoughts?

Are we entirely sure that meat alone is a cause of porkitude? What about carbs and refined white flour and high fructose corn syrup and transfats and peanut M&Ms;? Depending on your established eating habits, you’ll probably have to cut out a lot more besides just meat if your goal is fat reduction, plus, of course adding exercise to the mix. Still, it’s probably a good start.

Honestly, I don’t eat too much that’s wildly unhealthy and I’m not wildly porky. I’m probably about 80-percent vegetarian as is, and I rarely eat junk food or soda. But, assuming you’ve seen my old Xpress videos, you know I’m not exactly Mr. Fit, either.

I do spend about eight hours a day, seven days a week, sitting in front of a computer screen. That’s not healthy. I’m not expecting going veggie will change that by itself, but I’m thinking about it more in terms of being combined with things like “going outside,” which I hear can be nice.

Let us know what it’s like out there, eh?

I just recently gave up all meat except seafood.  I’m more fit than I’ve ever been and have great energy. I’ve also had some damn tasty meals.  If you love fish, why give it up?  Give the land animals a break for the summer and enjoy the light-flavorful blend of beautiful summer veggies with fish as your protein.  It still counts as a significant dietary change with plenty of health and body-shaping benefits.

Yes adding heavy metal to any diet is essential and delicious.

It may be tough to stick to it. Lots of cookouts on this street.

If you’re going to go veg the only time to even think it is from January to March. You won’t last past Memorial Day.

Oh no! Actually, I kind of miss having AK around here. She was fun to argue with.
