Her current favorite player is Grady Sizemore. She also likes Manny and Asdrubal Cabrera.
From the past, she says she likes Jackie Robinson, Bob Feller, Dave Justice, Hank Aaron, Kenny Loftin, Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Dave Winfield, and Jack Chesbro.
Dude, I can’t believe she just reeled off all these names!
Steam, she has played in the East and North Asheville leagues, though this year, she’s just playing street ball. Mostly, she reads. Her favorite book is “Watching Baseball Smarter.” She’s also read all of Dan Gutman’s historical baseball novels and several baseball history books.
Tattt, my spouse is fourth generation Cleveland born and bred. He (and the girl) would love to talk old tribe tales with you some time.
A baseball nickname that bothers me is ‘the Big Unit’, Randy Johnson. Johnson…unit…big…the…watching the game with my 7 year old daughter…etc.
That aside, he’s going for win #300 tonight. Many speculate he could be the last 300 game winner. There is hope out there for another several years down the road, but I wonder how baseball purists will adapt regarding the Hall of Fame.
Another nickname that bothers me in sports is ‘the Big Tuna’, Bill Parcels. It makes me throw up a little in my mouth each time I see him and hear that name for some reason.

you should have been watching the red sox game and she could already be in bed ... beckett lost a no hitter in the seventh ...
Sad days for Tribe fans ... In a division that was ripe for the taking .... the Indians not only aren’t hitting, but they can’t find a number one starter .....
of course the best team in baseball is still rising .... The Red Sox are starting to create a gap between the rest of the east contenders .... tonight John Smoltz takes the mound for the first time in a year .... the dodgers are only a short time from getting Manny back and that should lock up the NL west .... Cards have decided to contend in the NL central and Larussa gets his deserving 2500 wins ......
I’d like to see Cleveland contend, but it seems like they are not being run very well at the top. Their talent has actually declined when just 2 or 3 years ago it appeared that they had one of the most promising pools of talent in the league. No chance of succeeding without good starting pitching…and middle relief and a closer. Kerry Wood is just not that good. They have the 7th highest payroll in the AL, so it’s not like they are critically strapped like the Pirates or the Royals.
So we are about 10 days away from the midway point of the season. If the playoffs were to start today this is how it would look:
American League:
Red Sox vs. Angels
Yankees vs. Tigers
National League:
Dodgers vs. Phillies
Cardinals vs. Giants
I see few surprises at this point except for the Giants. I did think the White Sox would be in better shape, but they do tend to do a late season run. I imagine a lot will change over the 90 games.
The standings now may not be far off from how they finish .... phillies may have to fight off mets and Atl, but both those teams may self destruct ... and the phillies have been there with the same squad so they know what it is going to take ... the rays may have a little fight left in them, but they don’t want to fall too far behind ...
