Hmmm….the thot plickens.

Let’s do a brief recap to make sure we are on the same page. Please confirm or deny each point:

1. You can’t access GMail from your computer using Firefox or Internet Explorer
2. You CAN access GMail from other people’s computers
3.  You have run a full virus scan on your system with an up-to-date virus scanner
4.  You have run a full spyware scan on your system with an up-to-date spyware scanner
5.  You can access every other Google site except GMail.

What else may be at play?

Is this a laptop or a deskptop computer?

Windows or Mac, and what version of the OS?

Are you on dialup or high speed internet?

Do you have a router at home for wireless connectivity?

Is it possible she blocked herself from Gmail accidentally? Where would the setting be to check that?

Has she tried using Chrome?

Perhaps delete and reinstall Firefox (including a reg edit to delete the keys, and finding all the folders and deleting them)?

She said the problem was happening in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, so it seems to be somewhere beyond the specific browser.  This has turned into quite a stumper…I like it :D

I notice she didn’t say which version of IE she is using.  Say if she is still using IE 6, that could (perhaps?) cause a similar result, but be a completely unrelated problem.

So let me see if I can answer everything:

I’m using a PC, with Windows Vista.

High speed with a Linksys router.

Windows firewall- though disengaging it doesn’t change anything.

I haven’t tried Chrome but have deleted firefox and reinstalled it.

IE is version 7

Day 5 and still no response from gmail help forum (though I am seeing a couple of potentially similar issues from other posts on the help forum-and I must add some are quite vitriolic and incendiary. Though I’m not certain real people at gmail actually read these forums- are there real people there?)

I appreciate everyone’s help troubleshooting this!  Thanks.

have you tried this:

I don’t have Vista, but I am guessing the steps are the same:

Click on start

Click on Run

type in:

C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

I don’t know if this will work, but…

Download Hijackthis and post your log file if you think you may have a virus/spyware/malware/trojan.

Have you cleared your temp files? You can do this through windows(system tools > disk cleanup) or use a program like ccleaner

Does igoogle.com work? Search “gmail” in google and clicked the cached link under gmail?

Have you checked your router setting? How about your symantec setting? I would disable norton/symantec and see if thats your problem.

Redirect Loop

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

    Temp files are cleared.

The igoogle.com gave me this error message

The browser has stopped trying to retrieve the requested item. The site is redirecting the request in a way that will never complete.

from a google search for gmail:

I clicked onto the gmail link and got redirected to bullzeye.com or some such thing. Uh oh….

I’ve uploaded my Hijack this notepad doc and am awaiting results…..

Sorry, I dissected the error message. The IP config thing didn’t do anything.

There’s a thread on my work-forum where about fifteen people are complaining about the same things. This was the latest answer from one of the techies:

“There was an outage on the internet backbone in the US earlier, and Google was affected by it for some people. I know because it affected my network at work and the service provider reported it to me.”
