Not wanting to pay additional taxes is an entirely legitimate reason to fight annexation. I’m more inclined to see it the other way—there are a lot of city services beyond trash and fire/EMS/police—but I can certainly understand the other argument.
I think it’s honest to be able to have multiple reasons not to want to live in Woodfin: higher taxes, a deeply ingrained (and widely publicized) history of corruption, Woodfin Mayor VeHaun’s current conflict of interest as the director of the West Buncombe Fire Department (which is located in the proposed forced annexation area), the overly “protective” cops, the fact that the citizens of Woodfin’s most recent annexation are being restricted in the use of their private property, the lack of a recognizable downtown area, the lack of a library, nonexistent bike lanes, the fact that my kids won’t be allowed to go to their school. I could go on, but for me, this is more than enough!
If you care, come to the Woodfin town hall meeting at 6:30 next Tuesday…wear red.
Steve, Mr Waffles: OK, I see where you’re coming from (and it appears to be bit to my left, but I digress, this is the mountain xpress blog)
So, Steve, sorry for my slow reply: I am happy that you care about what happens in Asheville, but I’m from West Buncombe…as I said in my last post. Woodfin is not trying to annex Asheville. I’m not trying to discourage you from saying or doing anything. It’s still a free country, I just want it to remain so.
It is my belief that you stated your opinion in your original post: “As far as I can tell, the benefits far outweigh the bump in taxes.” That did not sound like a question to me, but I could be wrong.
If you consider an additional $600+ a year a mere bump, please come help us out if this actually goes thru. Or if you are that concerned about Woodfin, I’m sure they will accept a check from you for there treasury. They claim to be about $150,000 in the red at the present time.
Over they years surfing the ‘net, I have noticed, a common practice of anonymous “experts” rather quickly resort to “name calling,” “read the rules,” “it’s a free blog,” “I can say what I want” etc etc when they are questioned or called out to actually defend their position. I think you have given a good example on all counts.
Therefore, if you think I attacked you, I’m sorry you feel that way. Like you, I’m just a curious blogger, asking a simple question.
Thus, my question to you, again, is; where and what are these benefits that I’m suppose to enjoy paying a “bump” in my taxes for? And my original question was: “How much research have you done on the subject? Did you rent or own property when you lived in Woodfin?
Now, mister waffles, it appears to me that your subject matter expertise is more about “blowies” than any real facts about the history of Woodfin in general much less it’s Police Department or the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office. But, that’s just my opinion based on information you have published on this “free blog.”
Plus what I have read so far, I have serious doubts about your claim of “I am the only true spiritual person on the boards.” By that I mean, I don’t think we would exactly agree on the definition of spirituality.
My definition of spirituality is when caustic West Buncombers like yourself don’t resort to thinly veiled gay jokes as discourse, but then again, I’m just a dreamer, and I’m not the only one.
Actually, that is a quote from a much missed bag of wind who posted here a few months ago. You’d know that if you took the time to read the forums instead of coming in here full tilt on your pet issues.
I grew up in West Asheville, went to Skate Around USA every weekend, and once felt up a girl named Melanie there. I shop regularly in Woodfin (Pastimes for my comics and then the ABC store across the street for my bourbon).
I didn’t take a Woodfin history class in school, but then again, I saw no need to. I was just commenting on a topic.
PS to Steve: Unless you have a dog in our fight, send you opinions to the Spartanburg paper or maybe call someone who cares what you think. I have the number of a Chaplin at Ft. Bragg that might listen.
Outstanding now we are getting somewhere. You felt up A girl once….nope, I’m not going there, you are already offended. But you have left yourself wide open there, my friend. If the shoe fits!
I did not take a Woodfin history class either, I just happened to grow up in West Buncombe, Woodfin was our biggest sports rival. We all came together at Erwin, so I had many friends that grew up in the “Burlington Mill town” of Woodfin and what used to be known as Martel village. Used to play Sunday afternoon pickup football (the American version) at the Woodfin community center. Thus my comments and historical information about Woodfin and West Buncombe are from personal experience not something I read!
Just commenting on a topic, if that was all there would be no further discussion. But, I think you just wanted to jump on Steve’s bandwagon and pile on. So be it, I’ve been shot at by far bigger artillery than a couple of anonymous internet bloggers.
And for the record, your quote was from a John Lennon song, not your bag of wind buddy. I’m going to watch Sean Hannity someone that has a clue about where our country is really headed.
Mr waffles: I don’t think John Lennon ever said such a thing. He did say: “I’m just a dreamer, and I’m not the only one.” In one of his songs, probably before your time.
PFKrap…who are you and who the heck is Willard Cullen?
Hey, you fellows seem to like quotes, here are a couple of my favorites:
“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing that is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept free by the exertions of other men better than himself.” Author: unknown
Subject:
…Just a thought; only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you,
Jesus Christ and the American G.I.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.~
Author: unknown
Pick a country to move to, I know for a fact that I can raise the funds to get you a one way ticket.
Since you have now shown your true colors, I’ll leaving you with one more quote:
“Never argue with idiots… They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!!
PS to Steve: Unless you have a dog in our fight, send you opinions to the Spartanburg paper or maybe call someone who cares what you think. I have the number of a Chaplin at Ft. Bragg that might listen.
