Most comics are hardly “children’s literature”.  Fact is, America is one of the few countries where comics and cartoons are considered kid’s stuff, while the rest of the world recognizes them for the all ages art form they are.

(Of course there are those who sneer at anything with characters wearing costumes, while gobbling up pseudo-manga style “graphic novels” dealing with slacker angst…)

So far, the Black Lanterns storyline is off to a bangup start.  Don’t know what “Black Lanterns” are?  Time to broaden those literary horizons and head to the comics shop.  Stop by Pastimes, there’s still a few copies of the free prelude left.

I gather you didn’t realize I was being ironic.

In the Green Lantern mythos, they have always mentioned the Blackest Night- it’s in the GL oath (“in brightest day, in blackest night”), but it’s looked upon as hokum by the powers that be in the book.  But after the Sinestro Corps war, the war of light has begun.

Different corps broke out, with each group having a signature color and a corresponding part of the emotional spectrum. Suddenly, the Black Lanterns have appeared on Earth, with it’s wearers being the reanimated corpses of deceased DC comics heroes and villains. Big-ish heroes have died, and the series has had at least one or two holy shit moments in each issue.

It’s worth a read if you like DC comics, solid writing, and zombies.

Much more depth and nuance than the one-note “Marvel Zombies.”

Nah, just figured maybe you thought the cape and mask stuff was beneath you.  ;-)

I think this is DC’s way of saying “you want zombies, we’ll give you zombies…in continuity and with a story to boot”.

So far, it’s been very well done, and I think there are a few surprises still to come.

No not yet, although Chris at Pastimes has gotten me very interested (and I trust him since he agrees that Final Crisis was shite as well). I’ve been trying to limit how much I’m spending on comics.
I’ll be getting the trade.

I plan on it, really, but Marvel is taking all my monthly allowance for comics. Actually I’m getting ready to drop some of them because I refuse to pay 4 bucks for a normal sized comic.

Only a little. I always appreciated the more cosmic stuff (Nova is my current favorite) and I really wanted to get more in depth but…something always held me back. I think it’s how MASSIVE the DC cosmic line seems. Not to beat a dead horse, but Final Crisis, as massive and confusing as it was, did not motivate me to research DC storylines.
I am picking up the Sinestro Corps trade when I have a spare buck or two. I hear that was outstanding

Don’t forget to check out the current stockpile sale at TFAW. You can get scratch and dent Trade Paperbacks for the price of a single comic a lot of the time. You can also use the code: FALLING for free shipping on orders over $30.
