A couple of weeks back I saw my first ever bear in NC. Dead on the side of Rt. 9. It was quickly tagged and covered (by Fish & Wildlife, I assume) and was absolutely monstrous. It sat there for a couple of days before it was, apparently, buried on the spot.

Which sparked quite a bit of conversation amongst myself and neighbors.

That thing coulda supplied a whole hell of a lot of meat. Not to mention how much grease could be rendered from it and used for frying.

There’s actually a great article about eating roadkill here and people at the Wildroots Collective(in Madison Co.) kind of specialize in it.

So, anyone ever eaten roadkill? Would you? Why or why not?

i ate a good bit of a fawn an acquaintance and i processed on the spot, next to the rt 20 in CA. It was tasty, as expected. i liked the backstrap the best. lightly grilled with some veggies and spices…

people claim ‘wild’ meat is “gamey.” i dont really agree. most of it has to do with how it is harvested and processed, not to mention cooked.

on that same trip i was gathering a ton of apples, almonds, and figs, so the fawn was a great bonus… had a drying rack set up in the back window of my car.

a cop stopped and chatted us up a bit. he seemed kinda tickled by what we were doing…

here’s a thread that went nowhere…

edit: wow, i never realized wildroots has such a great website. or any website, for that matter.

Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies - or else? The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

I have heard that in some places, deer killed by motor vehicles, are given to local institutions that serve the poor or elderly.  Here is a solution in one town.

Dude, I live like 1/4 mile from where that bear was. That thing was absolutely humongous.
