Is Asheville still affordable for artists and other creative types?
Sure it is. 1
It’s not as cheap as it used to be, but it’s still worth the price for the community. 10
No. Artists are out, urban professionals are in. 8

Hendersonville is too fast=paced and urban for my tastes, I have to settle for living in Henderson County.

Really? You think it’s too fast-paced? I don’t think that at all.

Well, you know, maybe it’s just that I’ve lived out in the sticks for so long that’s coloring my perception, but to me it’s just all that big city infrastructure and the frenetic, hustle-bustle of the urban populace there that doesn’t allow for taking time to smell the roses, smell the coffee or recognize sarcasm.

Well, I moved up here from Orlando, so I’m just used to craziness I suppose. :)

Asheville is not artist friendly in terms of living expenses.  My son’s a talented potter with an MBA, a ticket to parking cars at a local resort.  The tiny house he shares with a girl friend (teacher) is too small to provide a work space so, with limited funds to begin with he rents space at a local facility.

Honestly though, I don’t think anywhere is friendly financially to artists anymore. I’m a freelance writer who really has become a starving artist. :p

Spartanburg is. I’m not going to shut up about it until every creative person in Asheville moves there to keep me company.

Ha, I’ll have to check out the prices just to see if you’re right.

My mortgage on my 1500 square foot, newly restored 1930s Arts & Crafts house two blocks from downtown is less than I was paying for the scummy apartment I had in the middle of nowhere in South Asheville. They just started a downtown farmer’s market, and they’ve invested heavily in the arts and culture scene in the last few years, most notably in the Hub-Bub project. It’s potentially very cool.
