Right on. I think there’s a difference between the honest and thoughtful believers and the rather idiotic and obnoxious worshipers who are waiting for the end of the world and while they’re waiting want to burn your Marilyn Manson albums.
Sure. I have nothing against the basic theme of Christianity, for instance. And I definitely appreciate people who are looking for some greater truth, even in the context of a religion. But the idea of worshiping a being—or, rather, the idea of a being, since there’s no evidence of an actual one—just baffles me.
What kind of being would want to be praised that badly? Not one I’d want anything to do with, I think. It takes the idea of the divine and makes it into something more akin to a parent with self-esteem issues. You praise it so it’ll be more inclined to forgive you if you stay out late.
Then again, I’m probably not the best person to talk about this stuff, given that I have a fairly hard-science view of the universe, and no need (or room) for a deity in that model.
