When five young men become stranded on a desolate planet with meager resources, the potential for disaster seems unavoidable — to find out their fate, you’ll have to wait until the film hits the theaters.
Thanks to the Obsidian Collective, a new media production company start-up that began shooting its first feature film last week, a slice of Hollywood has landed in Hendersonville.
A production crew led by Flat Rock native Ben Carland started filming “Sol,” a sci-fi-laced suspense drama, at Jockey’s Ridge State Park at the Outer Banks Oct. 8. Carland, 24, co-founded Obsidian Collective with fellow Hendersonville natives Jesse Krautwurst and Eric Anderson, along with New Yorker Alex Davis, in January 2008.
A 2003 graduate of Hendersonville High School, Carland graduated from Florida State University with a degree in filmmaking.
Obsidian Collective’s offices are at the corner of Main Street and First Avenue West, next door to the Historic Courthouse.
Though Obsidian Collective plans to primarily focus on feature-length film production, the company also offers photography, music, animation, digital art and Web design on their creative services radar. Besides feature films like “Sol,” other types of film production might include documentaries, animation, music videos and promo/campaign spots.
The ambitious young company’s key players are on a mission to redefine the way marketable movies can be produced.
“Hendersonville is best for us right now because all our resources and the people we’re working with are here,” says Carland. “One of the greatest things about being downtown is that you can meet people — they can easily drop by.”.........
