I’m sure everyone heard about the coal ash pond damn in tennessee failing last december.

The results were horrific.

The TVA says it could take 3 years (which means at least 6) to remove the 3 million cubic yards of ash from the water by early 2010.

This stuff is extremely toxic.

And yet Asheville has two unlined, barely regulated coal ash ponds of its own.

It amazes me that people would buy a house right next to one of these things.

Or that ‘Progress’ Energy would put them so close to people in the first place.

What say ye?

Is this just crazy?

Or am I chicken little?

The Progress dams are “not on [the high-hazard list] because of what’s in [them], but because of where they are…

So, what doesnt make sense to me is that it isnt a ‘danger’ until it contaminates a major waterway.

Isn;t that sort of identifying a potential problem and then just waiting for it to happen?

the article says that stuff is only 300 yards from the S French Broad…

EDIT: here’s a great coloring book for the kiddies. i might suggest altering the text a bit, though.
