So you are saying I could start a newspaper web site, but not the actual print newspaper, and just run press releases, all the while maintaining a facade of being the online version of the printed material? Hmmm….

There’s a weekly print ... let’s call it a newspaper for the sake of argument ... here in Spartanburg—I think it’s called “The Spartan”—which just reprints press releases. No original reporting of any kind, although they do occasionally have articles from one of the lower-end wire services as extra filler. They appear to make all of their money from public notices. It’s weird.

I suppose you have never seen those little one-sheets that pop up in odd places with names like “Coffee Times”? Often they print far less than even press releases, just trivia bits and cute (if often untrue) tales, all bordered by advertising.

Then again, I bet they don’t have a “profit margin” to worry about - just a little extra on the side to help with a mortgage payment or a child’s college tuition.
