I wish they’d get another grumpy and/or surreal Doctor. I hate how they’ve made him into this universe-saving do-gooder, when in the iconic Tom Baker era he was content to just screw around space and be flippant to everyone. (Granted, you’d need writers up to the task, and Baker had Douglas Adams.) I liked Eccleston’s interpretation, and Tennant was OK, but I’m really skeptical about Matt Smith.
I wish they’d get some old, cagey guy to play the Doctor. Someone who kind of echoes Hartnell’s original run.

I had a hard time with it, too. But, several years ago when I was living alone, I decided I needed some TV series to watch over the winter. At the time, there weren’t many available on NetFlix, but most of the old Dr. Who series was. So, I started at the beginning with Harnell’s Doctor, and it really grew on me. It’s very similar to how the old Star Trek series seems dated, but if you give it a shot you’ll see that they were actually doing some interesting, edgy, innovative stuff for the time.
That said, I’ve enjoyed the current series a lot less. It’s hard to think of anyone else as the Doctor after Tom Baker’s run.
