This was at least partially my fault. I showed him Fark.com during a meeting about online funding models.
If you’re feeling like a Pimp, Steve, go on and brush your shoulders off….
And while we’re making suggestions….
Hire Bugg back.
The MX’s music review section is lacking. Seriously lacking.
Look what kind of viewership Hanke generates. Just from the comment section on his blog alone I can tell he’s easily one of the most clickable employees of the MX.
No reason why that can’t be true for a MX music reviewer. Actually, it’s more of a sure thing. Why should I be going to Rolling Stone or Pitchfork or The Fader to read about music? By mixing national content with the abundant local fodder, something that is rare in the film aspect, you’re almost guaranteed high ad-generating click-through numbers.
And not only is Bugg controversial, but he’s good at what he does. Kinda like Hanke. I mean, Fuzztone rocks. It should be a part of the MX.
Whatever he wrote as a private citizen on the MX forums, surely it shouldn’t be held against Bugg and/or the general music loving WNC populace.
I suggest a letter writing campaign.
Also, thank you, You actually get what I was going for.

yeah, nothing against the bugg, or his awesome fuzztone (never heard of any of those band, btw), but i’m not saying i think the MX needs to re-hire him or whatever.
i think the BlogWire feature is cool, and I hope shanfelty can continue to hold the MX’s hand as it emerges to become one of the better ‘alternative’ news sites in the larger South East Region.
Certainly linking to regional websites like Fuzztone is a good idea, though. It’s a great site, well put together. i’m kinda impressed by the spork section lately, too, though.

To clarify, Bugg was never on staff at Xpress. He was one of many freelancers in the A&E section.

While I’d like to think I pull my weight as a consultant, the Xpress is really doing some bang-up stuff these days when it comes to transitioning to be a print/web-hybrid company. There have been some great strides forward for the company in the last few months, some of it in behind the scenes stuff like workflow that the general public never hears about, and there are many, many ideas in the development queue.
I think Piffy isn’t far off in saying that it’ll be “one of the better ‘alternative’ news sites in the larger South East Region,” and in some was it’s already leading the way. For instance, the MXNOW Twitter thing—developed in-house—is one of the very first attempts by anyone, anywhere into making Twitter usable as a journalism tool at the local level. (Although my personal dislike of Twitter makes it hard for me to really want to use it.)
Again, the Web team at Xpress deserves some mad props as far as I’m concerned.
now, if they just put some effort into over-all design and some god-damned motherfucking key words so people actually find the information when they do a web search, instead of topix or the chamber of commerce website, or the AC-T…
So, to clarify, the best way we can improve the BlogWire feature is to get Bugg a column? I smell boardin’ bias.
Nope. Just pointing out an obvious lack of quality music writing at the MX. Music is HUGE in WNC, yet there’s not a ‘Hanke-of-music’ anywhere in sight for the MX. Just. Plain. Dumb.
And if there was some sort of suggestion box ANYWHERE on the website I would’ve put it there.
But if you really wanted to point out that the thread was drifting off topic, you prolly should’ve started when I was trying to give you props.

yep. It’s gotten better, but still fairly low grade. Especially the Forums. It’s starting to smell like some hacker’s basement in here.
