I’m sure this topic has been beaten to death, but I want to know something. I was reading an article on this site about Montford and Alt-4B and I want to know if Alt-4B is still a viable option? I have seen several of the plan options and it seemed to me that Alt-4B was the best because it kept the current bridges and added a new one for freeway traffic (I think), and in addition to that it causes the least destruction of current homes and businesses.

I really want to know, Why are people against this?

I have a friend who lives in the Burton St community with a very nice house, and she is saddened by the notion that her house may be taken from her and demolished at some point in the future. This saddens me as well. Hers and so many other homes could potentially be saved if revisions were made to the current roadway/corridor plans. Maybe there should be a new alternative altogether, I don’t know I’m not an engineer.

I know that all of the options require some kind of “re-zoning of land” as it were, but isn’t 4B the least invasive?

I really think people should care more about their fellow townspeople than to allow any more destruction of homes and businesses than absolutely necessary. Whoever is running the show with these plans needs to make that -priority one-. Life is simply too short to drive someone out of their home for the sake of a lousy road.

I seek your opinions on this matter, and I also ask anyone who is in agreement with my above statements to do everything you can to minimize the loss of the homes of your fellow townspeople.

Thank you very much!

The thought of taking homes and businesses definitely sucks. However, I have no idea what 4B is. Do you have any links to the plans that we can check out?

NC DoT I-26 Connector Alternatives
We studied each NCDoT recommendation and only Alternate #4 offered the potential to comply with the CCC Report and the 10 Principles for Livable Cities .  Images of the four current NCDoT alternates (including links and contacts) are provided for your review. Additional insight into the DoT perspective and decision making process can be found by reviewing their Strategic Plan for Transportation. For greater detail of each Alternative, view the Workshop Maps, Section B prepared by the DoT and available on their web site at http://www.ncdot.org/projects/I26Connector/maps.html [doesnt seem to work].  We suggest that you first view the Alternate Image to see how the maps that comprise that Alternate relate to each other.  Note that the files are very large.

I favor a ten-mile wide stretch of asphalt with no lines and no speed limit connecting 40 and 26 and 240.

I favor the road destroying most of Kimberly Avenue and all of Beaverdam Road. Seriously. #### those people.

Heh.

Anyways, the problem is that no one bothers to mention that these projects wouldn’t even really be necessary if people didn’t use the damn interstates as some sort of in-town bypass.

You mean they aren’t supposed to hop on 240 to go from Merrimon Ave to Charlotte Street?

That, too. Also traveling from South Asheville to West Asheville. South to North is *almost* excusable, as there’s almost no intelligent way I can think of to get from South to North.

Does anyone even go to East Asheville?

I should go back and look at a map. At any rate, Charleston is certainly not much better and if you think traffic is awesome in Asheville then I invite you to come down here and spend thirty minutes to an hour and a half stuck on a bridge a couple hundred feet above a river while traffic is halted because of a wreck on another bridge three miles away.

And there’s no exit ramps off a bridge.

At least they replaced that rickety Ashley-Cooper erector set bridge. My wife would close her eyes every time we had to drive over it. Good thing she wasn’t driving.

Would you believe there is a playground directly beneath the bridge on the Mt. P side?

Directly. Beneath.

I should take a camera over there one day and get pics of that.

I think the least amt of houses possible should be affected, regardless of location.
