This is sort of localish ...

WILKESBORO, N.C. — State Alcohol Law Enforcement agents seized 929 gallons of moonshine Wednesday and arrested a Wilkesboro man, authorities said Friday.

Roger Lee Nance, of 1117 Shew Ridge Mission Road, was charged with possession of non-tax paid liquor, possession of non-tax-paid liquor for the purpose of selling, and possession of equipment and ingredients intended for the use in the manufacture of an alcoholic beverage.

“This is one of the biggest seizures of white liquor I’ve seen come out of the mountains in my career,” ALE Director John Ledford said in statement.

The arrest follows a two-month investigation by ALE agents, assisted by the state Highway Patrol. In addition to the liquor, large amounts of sugar and other items were seized during a search of Nance’s property, authorities said.

This doesn’t seem like that big of an operation to me, though. 1,000 gallons of moonshine is a lot of mason jars, sure, but when you think about it, that’s only like 24 oil drums worth of booze. That’s could fit in a small garage. It seems like a mediocre bust to me, not something the ALE has much cause to brag about.

Liquor isn’t illegal as long as it is taxed by the government. Sooo…now that the government has the moonshine how about slapping a bit-o-tax on there and selling it to the interested public? It’s not like pot, coke, crack, smack, paddy whack, or meth that are illegal and therefore you have to expend vast amounts of man hours and resources (tax dollars) in the unwinnable effort to stop those from selling what others want to buy. In this case the product is actually legal and with the applicable taxes applied we could recoup some of the cost of the seizure of the product. I think of it as symmetry in over bearing government and law enforcement.

I still think it was wrong to imprison Popcorn Sutton at such an old age. Did he ever hurt anyone? I highly doubt it. He will definitely be missed and remembered by many including myself, as a historical icon of the region.
