My boss lady Minnie died gently last night at Mission Hospital, having had a stroke last Saturday morning. I will miss her, and try my best to keep the standard of the Picnics bakery on point, and all the other billion and one details of her beloved little shop that she would remind me of a million times a day.
And I will try to learn more Beatles and Johnny Cash songs in her honor as well. And get some more players to play with me, ‘the more the better’ she would say, and of course ‘play something with some pep!’
I’ve never eaten anything from Picnics. I think I heard something bad about their food in the mid-1990s and never bothered going there. Now, I’ll never know what the deal was.
That’s up to you. But I assure you, the food is delicious, the bakery is outrageously good, and the service… well I’m of the opinion it is great (seeing as though I’m the head server). I just don’t want your post to make people think Picnics is closed, Steve. We are open, it’s just that the co-owner and master pie baker is gone.
Rest in Peace Minnie. The pie was the best in town, although I’ve had to give it up since I had to go Gluten-Free. It was still provided the best pie I ever could have hoped for over many a birthdays. My thoughts go out to her family and the family of Picnic’s.

Yes, she was a great maker of pie. The Food Network featured Picnic’s and her pie several years ago, when Rachel Ray was (and maybe still is ) doing her $40.00 a day show.
I’m sorry to hear that! R.I.P. Ms. Smith! Picnics was one of the first Asheville restaurants I tried when I moved here years ago and I got to meet her. She seemed like a lovely lady and I quite enjoyed their food.
