From the AP (but there are hundreds of other stories out there about this) ...

CANTON, N.C. — A North Carolina pastor says his church plans to burn Bibles and books by Christian authors on Halloween to light a fire under true believers.

Pastor Marc Grizzard told Asheville TV station WLOS that the King James version of the Bible is the only one his small western North Carolina church follows. He says all other versions, such as the Living Bible, are “satanic” and “perversions” of God’s word.

On Halloween night, Grizzard and the 14 members of the Amazing Grace Baptist Church also will burn music and books by Christian authors, such as Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

So, 14 people decide Billy Graham isn’t Christian enough and that nothing but the King James version of the Bible—a translation of a translation—is the “real” word of their deity. This tiny group of religious extremists burn some books that you can buy on Amazon or at a thrift store for pennies a piece, and somehow this is international news?

I can see how locals here would be interested—“Oh, those wacky Cantonites”—but

It even made the Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/6346662/North-Carolina-church-plans-Halloween-Bible-burning.html

Slow news day, I guess. I mean, did the national media finally meet its quota of stories about how taking a bath can be deadly or something?

I’m going to this “event” and I’m going to fight all 17 members of the congregation. I think I’ll do okay.

I’d think so. If they were true Christians, they’d turn the other cheek, right?

I don’t actually know these people but live right down the road from the church. This kind of thing gives Christians a bad name. No wonder people don’t want to hear about God. The church website has been suspended!! Wonder why??? It is amazing who people will follow.

There is going to be a silent protest this night. Please come!!!

I just think it’s astonishing that these are “Christian” people burning “Christian” book for not being “Christian” enough. I mean, I’ll never read any of that stuff, and I can’t imagine it’ll be a great loss to world literary or theological culture of they burn some mass-market paperbacks that were probably produced by the millions. And it’s certainly a valid form of free speech.

As long as they paid for the books, they can burn the lot as far as I’m concerned.

Well I have read that stuff and was raised on that stuff and I’m still confused. God gave his only begotten son, and had him crucified on the cross for my sins..? wow that’s weak..

To tell ya the truth I much prefer the mORMON THING OF GOD COMING FROM A PLANET FAR A WAY called Kolob…

We really need to rewrite the Bible and get some real talent in there…If you’re gonna hypnotize the masses to behave and fight for the right and the American way…you should at least guarantee them 20 virgins in the after life..

No wonder those Taliban are fighting so hard..they got something to look forward to..

Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies - or else? The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

This was on WLOS last Sunday. Don’t ask me how I know that.

Anyways, they’re burning bibles and Dr. James Dobson books so who cares?

Shooting people is illegal. Burning books is not. Advocating a point of view is also not illegal, unless that point of view advocates a patently violent and/or illegal activity.

And none of this prevents a private web host from shutting off an account for whatever reason it wants to.

So, um. Welcome to the forum. And to the internets. Some of us play rough.
