There are so many places to see/discover/love/hate etc. Where would you love to live? If it’s not where you’re living then why aren’t you there? Where would you love to be?
I think I would like to live near the Giants’ Causeway on the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland, but I have to realize that I’ve only been there once for a couple days in September. What it might be like in the dead of winter could be another matter. Why I’m not there is mostly financial. Then again, I’m pretty happy where I am most of the time.
Thanks Ken, as am I. I’ve just been to so many great places and wonder if “coming home” is really the best decision:) What are the ups and downs of living in one place for “one year”?
I guess if we’re talking about a foreign country to live in - or at least have a second home - the closest I’ve come to such a decision would have been in Fiji. My wife and I spent some time there about 3 years ago on vacation, and I loved it. We could have bought a home in a development being built near where we were staying on the island of Vanua Levu near the small town of Savusavu. It’s warm there year-round, the people are friendly and unassuming, and best of all, they speak English there. The main thing that stopped us was the fact that Fiji is just so far away and so expensive to travel back and forth.

I would love to go there! I know I will someday:) You’re right, though. To travel back and forth is so expensive and would eat up a lot of time! If I went I don’t know I’d come back
Carrie, another place I loved that we went to the year before the Fiji trip was French Polynesia (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora). Love to visit, but couldn’t ever live there. First, there is the language barrier - everybody speaks French, the official language. Very few, if any, locals can speak or understand English. Plus, nobody can buy property there unless they are a French citizen. Other than that, great place for a vacation.
That sounds great too! I would have an issue with the language, though. We’re heading to Costa rica in Dec. and my husband and I both speak some Spanish… enough to communicate and understand people that don’t don’t speak English. It definitely makes the trip more comfortable! The only French I know is (pronounced) “Ooo-ay”-‘where is’ and the word for bread:)
We’re making it a mission to go as many places as possible to try out everywhere. I’m mostly partial to Central/South America. I’ve been to Europe a few times and many countries there but have an extreme fear of flying! I try not to let it stop me but flights that are really long make it a problem.
I’ve heard good things about Panama, and Honduras.(Roatan the islands off the coast are supposed to be lovely and affordable).supposed to be like Costa Rica 20 years ago..I’ve traveled through out Mexico..The Yucatan is great for divers and adventure..the central is better for the colonial Mexico vibe.. Consider renting and looking for a lot and maybe build a place..Lots of places in Mexico allow more primitive structures..I was looking at getting a small thatched roof shelter built for 500 bucks on a lot right near the beach..make sure you do due diligence when doing a deal out side of country..there’s some sneaky cons looking for doe eyed tourists to dupe..
I’ve heard you can live cheaply in Belize 700 to 1000 a month..good diving and they speak english..I would suggest you try an extended vacation before deciding where to live..
Also check the Expat sites and read the forums great sources of info…
Hey Carrie, Belize is a cool country. Speak english or spanish, and other dialects. No big army, beautiful sea and reefs, amazing jungle (what is left)
Lots of Mennonites and Amish settled there because of no army, and they make lots of “local” products. Great cheeses, dairy stuff, mediocre beer (esp. after livin in beer City)
Lots of fresh water similar to NC. And some really cool Mayan ruins and culture.
