Why are are so many streets in Asheville lacking sidewalks?

Sidewalks are socialist. People with jobs have cars, hippie.

We were watching the trick-or-treaters stumbling around in the rainy ditches tonight (sidewalk socialists that we are) and realized that this is the only place we’ve ever lived where someone who builds a house is not required to sidewalk the street frontage and link up to the storm sewers. What confederacy of dunces came up with this failure of urban design?

Typical. you want the someone else to pay for sidewalks so you can promote some Socialist Pagan holiday that encourages your children to demand candy from total strangers, not to mention trespassing and poor diet.  no wonder the Terrorists are winning.

Ayn Rand would have something to say about this. The altruistic handing out of candy is just plain wrong.

Yuck I would imagine it has a lot to do with the rolling terrain, current and former lax zoning rules and a historical design ethic of placing things so close to the road that in the not so distant past was packed dirt and gravel at best providing passage for foot and animal powered traffic.

It all amounts to a hill of beans.
