It’s changed to “Her Majesty” by The Beatles.

A few years ago, I had what must have been a two-week period with Daft Punk’s “Da Funk” stuck firmly in the back of my mind.

Ouch. Anything repetitive like that is especially trying.

You’re right. “Teen Spirit” will be covered and sang at weddings like “Yesterday” and “Something”.

(that was sarcasm)

I liked Nirvana. I really did. What they were was a kick in the ass to a music community that was needing one, but they were anything but innovative. They took The Pixies’ formula and a riff lifted from a Boston song and started a revolution that was already burning out when its figurehead blew his brains out on that April day in 1994.

But to compare Nirvana, a band who was no better than the sum of their collective influences and downright derivative at times to band like The Beatles, whose music is so good that it’s actually a tired cliche to say how good they are, is criminally stupid.

Also, the idea that the band would still matter today because other bands from their time are still touring is just strange and like comparing apples and oranges.  Poison and Warrant, two bands that Nirvana proved irrelevant in the long run are still touring, also. So what does that mean about Nirvana?

I still resent grunge for being the wet blanket to the silly party that new wave was bringing to us in the wake of meaningless disco and too-meaningful punk. Those debbie downers and their plaid moping got rid of our Devos and our B-52s and our Talking Heads and even our Oingo Boingos and for what? So they could be just as irrelevant even sooner and beget emo? Thanks for nothin’ you flannel-clad sourpusses.

Last I remembered, New Wave was an early 80s phenomenon that lasted until around 84 at the latest, while Grunge hit the “mainstream” in the early ‘90s.

Your timeline is screwed, dude.

Maybe I was still listening for six years after the “official” end.

That’s fine, but don’t crap on a style of music because you were late to another style’s party.

Today, it’s a mash-up called “Heatbreaker” (Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” with Martha and the Vandellas’ “Heatwave”). It’s like having two songs stuck, rather than the standard one.
