While I love cats (not a big fan of dogs, sorry all), I’m a bird lover most of all. I have a trio of feathered friends at my place. I own a lovebird and a budgie and my mother’s quaker is living with me (they are all friends). My parents own two African Greys.

My birds can beat up your birds anyday.

Yes, I’m talking to you!

My mother owned birds, Australian Cockatiels.  Lot’s of family stories about that bird who came into our home when I was 3 and died nearly 16 years later.  I had an aunt who raised finches and canaries but none could equal the character we knew as Rosy.

Birds creep me out. I’ve seen too many owners with mauled fingers from a beloved pet parrot that mistook a knuckle for a nut. For a person whose livelihood depends on typing, that’s a frightening thought.

Well don’t go bowling either then, Steve - the thought of sticking your spacebar, K and L fingers into a 16 lb object and then twisting it as you throw it ought to give you pause also.

Back on topic, i have had a few birds (parakeets, cockatoos, finches) and they’re cool as pets and can be quite amusing in their antics (one bird would scream “Happy Birthday” every time we gave it yoghurt).  Still, i’m happy with my pooch.

That’s pretty rare. I’m a writer and I’ve had birds around for years. It’s much more likely that the person with injuried fingers was teasing the bird or something similar, as birds are too smart to confuse a finger for a nut.

You crazy people can have your birds. I’m sticking with my dog. At least when she mauls me, it’s out of a very clumsy kind of love.

i know this crazy old hippie (who i adore) who lives up in the hills of tennessee with a 30-year old bird (can’t remember the breed) who is huge and sits in the window of his cabin, taking it all in. when there, she talks constantly in spits and phrases from songs and tv shows over the last 30 years. it’s AMAZING her timing ... she says the most relevant things (but they’re quotes from 70s and 80s sitcoms and pop songs through the decades) all throughout any conversation going on in the cabin (it’s small, she can hear everything!). it’s a hoot ...

another friend had a bird that could whistle the tune to andy griffith PERFECTLY on cue ...

i do love my friends birds ... but i don’t think i’m mature enough to handle one of my own ...

Birds are very smart, that’s why they seem to know what’s going on. :)

Does that mean calling somebody a bird brain is not really an insult?  moskingqa5.gif
