Alaska Governer Sarah Palin is McCain’s VP choice. With previous VP choices like Agnew and Quale in the past (note: these were wins), does the VP choice really matter or is this a real smart move on the Republican side to pick up where Hillary left off?
I disagree totally. This is a half baked attempt to attract Clinton voters. It’s not going to work, she’s far too conservative to substitute for Ms Clinton. Be that as it may, just tune in and listen to the political wags running their mouths endlessly.
Palin, 44, who’s in her first term as governor, is a pioneering figure in Alaska, the first woman and the youngest person to hold the state’s top political job.
She catapulted to the post with a strong reputation as a political outsider, forged during her stint in local politics. She was mayor and a council member of the small town of Wasilla and was chairman of the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska’s oil and gas resources, in 2003 and 2004.
I’ll say one thing, she’s prettier than Hillary but...yes it is a major gamble that McCain is going to lose. My condolences, all you Republicans but it’s time for change and she ain’t it. Cannot wait to see her face Joe Biden in a debate. should be a real winner.
To me, there’s a distinct possibility that neither presidential candidate will complete the full 4 year term. This means that choice of competent VP is critical.

It’s not a major gamble at all. Romney would have been a gamble. Aside from the experience issue, this is a very safe pick.
Sure, it’s identity politics, but Palin is very smart and well spoken. Just because Biden has decades of experience bloviating in the senate doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll destroy her in the debates.
None the less, this is going to get very interesting.

Interesting? Certainly. I await her responses to the inevitable barrage of questions and most of all, her meeting with Joe Biden in debate. Under some circumstances I would fine her attractive (I do as a man) but she is not going to take Clinton votes and add them to McCain’s column. McCain has selected a choice that will appeal to NO woman who values her right to choose. You can bet that Hillary will not let this fact go unnoticed.
She kind of turns me on but that won’t get her my vote. I am a face man above all. Married one of the prettiest girls around and that’s no joke. Picture provided upon request.

Wow.
That’s a whole thread by itself. Am I reading too much into your comment if I come away with the impression that you think Obama has a good chance of being assassinated?
McCain, unlike most of the republican faithful, knows the writing is on the wall .... He had no choice ... He can’t bring in somebody that has any ties to the failed administration or the party for that matter ... he will have his hands full trying to avoid answering questions about his supporting 8 failed years of republican mismanagement ....
Palin is geographically distanced from washington, she is politically distanced from washington… and she is a woman which by definition separates her from republican party goals .... most republicans are probably asking if she is Michael’s wife ... and who knows ... Mrs Palin herself looks so shocked I am not sure she knows ....
be realistic JSM’s legacy is in a trivia quiz not in the white house ...

I’d say after being vetted for the past month the surprise has worn out. No, most Reps hadn’t heard of her till a few months ago but the wheels have been turning on this all summer.

Yes i think that has to be considered as much as McCain’s health conditions. There’s a lot of crazies out there and too many of them have guns and/or access to weaponry. And not just racists and neo-nazis but people who like, say Mark Chapman or John Wilkes Booth just want to snag their place in history.
You can start that thread, but i’d like to keep this one on the VP side of things please.
It means that more than ever the VP choices are no longer just another cabinet member - everyone in power wants more. And we should consider the candidates’ VP selection(s) in more light than just how they would be setting up a cabinet.
Personally, i’d like to see us go to a system where the VP is the runner up in an election.

in all fairness there is always some vetting toward candidates just to say they were considered ... I really don’t think she ever thought she would actually get the nod ... In the back of her mind I wonder if she feels as if she is the hail mary ?
