I’m pretty sure I’m not the only comics reader here, so I thought it would be fun to discuss what comics I/we are picking up this week.
Here’s my pull list for 9/4:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #18
The Boys #22
Amazing Spider-Man #569 (missed last week due to UPS screwing up Chris’ order) & 570
Invincible Iron Man #5
Secret Invasion Front Line #3
X-Men Manifest Destiny #1 (Please don’t suck please don’t suck please don’t suck)
Plus whatever catches my eye or Chris at Pastimes highly recommends.
I was pretty cynical about the new Spidey plots (a freaking parkour criminal? Really?) but with the daughter of Kraven storyline and now having Romita on board for a while my opinion has changed.
I’m also psyched about Iron Man, a series I passed over initially as the usual money grubbing from Marvel. But my son spotted it one day as his comic of the week choice and after reading the first issue I grabbed the rest. Good stuff in there.
Will be avoiding like the plague: Marvel Monkeys. Monkeys? They ain’t no zombies, that’s for sure.
I went for the first time in a month today and got the following:
Legion of 3 Worlds #1
Brave and Bold #16
Justice League of America #24
Avengers the Initiative #16
The Last Defenders #6
The Mighty Avengers #17
The New Avengers #44
Amazing Spider-Man #567-570
Green Lantern #34
Final Crisis: Rogue’s Revenge #2
Superman #679
Justice Society of America #18
Action Comics #868
Captain America #41
I hate buying monthly, but my work keeps me away from the comic shop. However, New Comic Book Day is the best when you have a whole day’s worth of reading ahead of you. It especially helps with the Spider-Man stuff.
Nah, I assumed since you hadn’t gotten to the shop lately you hadn’t had a chance to read the new SI.
I like some DC titles, JSA and JLA especially, but I swear the DC universe has to be the most complicated thing I’ve ever seen. How many earths again?
Then again, if you factor in all the Ultimate and New Universal stuff with Marvel, it’s probably pretty intimidating as well. That’s why I completely ignore anything not in continuity, as much continuity as there is anyways.
I’m also more of a DC guy and have not purchased monthly titles in the last 18 years or so, but I try to get trade paperbacks and compilations to at least keep up with some things I have missed. TFAW had a nice 80% off and nick and dent sale last month that allowed me to get a lot of them for cheap!

So I’m caught up with Ultimate universe and Marvel Zombies titles and Civil War and Justice, 52 and all the Crises on this and that but don’t know anything about the current Skrull business or Sinestro Corps thing.
Hmmm… I may do that. I got the “Death and Return of Superman” omnibus and I understand as a result of those events, Hal went crazy and bad and became Parrallax and killed a lot of people, then became the Spectre or something like that, so I really should find out for sure what the deal was on all that.
Yeah. Have you read Crisis on Infinite Earths or Infinite Crisis yet? There are some things in there that are touched on in Sinestro Corps. Some of the reveals won’t matter as much to you if you don’t check those out.
I wasn’t much of a DC guy, but their chain of Infinite Crisis to 52 to Sinestro Corps really made me a believer. Also of note is Grant Morrison’s entire run on Batman, as well as his Seven Soldiers collections.
Yes, I have the compilations of both COIE and Infinite Crisis as well as the accompanying tpbs (OMAC project, Day of Vengeance, Villains United, Rann-Thanagar War, Identity Crisis, etc.) so I would probably be up to speed enough not to be confused by the Sinestro corps continuity.
TFAW is having another one of their great Nick ‘n’ Dent sales of 60% off. It’s a great way to pick up trade paperbacks or single comics for cheap with no tax and if you use the Coupon code: MISTLETOE you will get FREE Domestic Shipping On $35+ IN-STOCK ORDERS (Expires: 12/31/08).
Thanks brebro! I’ve been looking to pick up some trades.
Amazon had some great deals during the “Cyber Monday” promotion and I picked up a bunch of DC stuff I’d wanted.
Was wondering if ya’ll could give some recommendations…
Getting into graphic novels (or at least I want to)...pretty much all I’ve read are ‘The Sandman’ books, which I friggin’ love….
Any suggestions on where to go next?
Gaiman’s other series are pretty good, if you can find them. “Lucifer” and “The Books of Magic” come to mind, as does “Black Orchid.” You could also try Alan Moore’s work—“V for Vendetta,” “Watchmen,” “From Hell,” “Miracle Man” or his run on “Swamp Thing”—for something slightly more brainy.
If you like the updated fantasy thing that Gaiman does, you might want to try “Fables,” which is vaguely along the same lines (although less clever, in my view). There’s also Eric Shanower’s work—his entertaining “Oz” work and his “Age of Bronze” series putting a more modern spin on the Trojan War. If you like more human interactions, you might want to try Craig Thompson’s “Blankets” or “Goodbye Chunky Rice.” Jason Lute’s “Berlin” series is also pretty cool.
There’s also local comic book writer/artist Hope Larson, who is something of a rising star in indie comics. Her books are generally quick reads, but I’ve enjoyed them all.
Superman 683
Justice Society of America 22
Justice League of America 28
Brave and Bold 20
Green Lantern 36
Avengers the Initiative 20
Captain America 45
New Avengers 48
Batman 681-683
Final Crisis 4 (still need to get 5)
Loving the Superman comics, JSA and Green Lantern is becoming a must read. Cap is still awesome and Amazing Spider-Man is good stuff. I’m glad they are getting some quirky, Ditko influenced artists on there.
