Check out the fantastic “So Tired”. Kinda makes you wonder: if these guys were from Brooklyn instead of Asheville, would they be all over Pitchfork and Spin already?
Silvergun Superman is a rock band in a town that does not have a whole lot of true rock music. There are a lot of fantastic bands, but sometimes, you need to just have some face-melting rock!
Keep them coming. I’ll probably take a listen to the Shitz and Jason’s suggestions a little later today, but I’ll be checking in on the thread until I write this week’s Listening Party.
Well, do you plan to ever expand beyond pop-genres? cause if so I want to suggest Nathan Shirley. I heard him playing the piano at the Renaissance Hotel downtown about a month ago, and he is totally amazing. I talked with him a little bit and he doesn’t even have a gig with the hotel- he had wandered over from traffic court (speeding ticket) and just noticed that there was a vacant piano by the bar! This is original classical music, not tinkly new-age or pop standards. He’s a composer but he plays his own music too- all the piano on his website is him. http://www.nathanshirley.com What do you think?

I wasn’t aware that Listening Party was seen as exclusively covering pop-genre acts. (I certainly would never, ever call Dig Shovel Dig a pop act, for instance. Or Laura Blackley, for that matter.) I guess there’s a bit of a slant towards indie rock — there’s usually one each week — but that’s largely because “indie rock” isn’t really a genre so much as it is a safe shorthand for “rock band with various influences I’d prefer not to get into too deeply.”
That said, I’ll be glad to consider Nathan Shirley’s work for a future Listening Party.
Cool. I didnt intend “pop” as an insult. I think of it as a question of musical formatting: there’s traditional/folk style, jazz, classical, and pop….. so in that way ‘pop’ covers alot of ground.
but i see your point, too…. and anyway there’s alot of crossover appeal between these genres so the more the better right?
violadee: I see the distinction you’re making. Actually, it might be fun to do an entire Listening Party on the local classical groups as well. I’m sure there are enough chamber quartets to make that happen. It’s a shame the Asheville Symphony doesn’t have a MySpace.
