I’m a big fan of Steebo’s!

I love the sculptures all around town, and I wish that whoever it is that’s stealing them from the urban trail would fall into a wood chipper.

That lends to an interesting idea.  Where were sculptures stolen from?  It would be fun for artists to have a few spots that are rotating displays..."Sculpture of the Moment”, so to speak.

Part of the “Marketplace” station on Chestnut St was stolen, as was the smaller bronze pig from the “Crossroads” station in Pack Square.  The ######## who are stealing them seem to be out for the smaller, easier to remove stations.  This means we can expect the top hat, cane and gloves from “Stepping Out,” the bronze fiddle and quilt from “Appalachian Stage,” and probably the bust from “Elizabeth Blackwell, M.D.” to go next.

I can just imagine how it goes when the ####### thief (AT) tries to sell them.

AT:  Here, I found these in my basement and I want to sell them.  As you can imagine, I have lots of bronze statues just sort of lying around, collecting dust and getting in the way.  I trip over them all the time when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

Idiot Scrapyard Owner:  Uh, durrr (flapping hand against chest)… Okay.  Here’s monies.

AT:  Thanks!  I’ll go fetch another one from downtown—uh, I mean, my basement.  Basement.  That’s where I have lots of bronze statues lying around.  Basement.  NOT downtown.  I’m NOT stealing them from downtown.  Not at all.  Not me.  No sirree.  Basement.

yes, steebo is definitely one of the more ‘under’ appreciated asheville artists...I hate to see that happen because his work is unique and very labor intensive

If you get a chance to get out to the UNCA campus, near Owens Hall, check out the student sculptures there

I know it is gone now, but the “Fridge Henge” that was by the river in 06 was great. It made me laugh and admire at the same time. Having been to Stonehenge and then seeing fridge henge, I thought it was brilliant.

I loved it too - even helped work on it, and it was fun.  Here it is in front of the paper model we used to assemble it.

My take on the Harry McDaniel’s 12-foot-tall aluminum sculpture “Deco Gecko” in Pritchard Park.

That particular close up looks very Seussian. Almost like Mount Crumpit.

You’re right! That’s the mountain I was thinking of. I should amend my last description from “Seussian” to “Burtonesque.”
